  • U.S. Cattle Inventory Smallest in 73 years

    Bernt Nelson, Economist|Mar 13, 2024

Editors Note: This article was brought to the PCN's attention by Marko Manoukian, Secretary/Treasurer of the Phillips County Livestock Association. USDA's January and July Cattle Inventory reports, released toward the end of each respective month, provide the total inventory of beef cows, milk cows, bulls, replacement heifers, other steers and heifers, and the calf crop for the current year. With drought and high input costs compelling farmers to market a higher-than-normal percentage of female...

When you turn your clocks forward t...

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 13, 2024

While working at the Bozeman Chronicle some 20-odd years ago I was offered the chance to take part in an adventure race. Not knowing exactly what an adventure race entailed, I nonetheless jumped at the opportunity to get out of the office for a week. A multi-discipline, team affair, the race consisted of mountain biking, hiking, rafting, riding horses, and rappelling along a 200-mile course through the surrounding mountains. I was quite comfortable with everything except rappelling, about which...

  • Where Does Time Go?

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Mar 13, 2024

Wasn’t it great, after a long week of activities, tournaments, and events and exhausting one’s self out, to wake up one hour earlier! I can hear some sneers and groans as you read this. So many people lost that hour of opportunity to get their life in order…dern it! It slipped away! Wouldn’t it be nice to just decide where the clocks should be and please Mr. Benjamin Franklin, the bankers and golfers…and alleviate the need to reset clocks around the house, then read the manual to set the car clock, or just get used to adding one hour to the ti...
