This Saturday, May 18, Blue Ridge Brewing will team up with Malta Parks and Rec for the first annual Malta Beer Run, but last Thursday the local brewery hosted the Montana Pint.O' Beer Run, which included way less exercise...in fact, none. The Pint.O Beer Run featured live music and much more as Billings' Wes Urbaniak and the Mountain Folk made Malta and Blue Ridge Brewing the fourth of 15 stops across the state of Montana. • Whitewater News and Opinion for May 15, 2019

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|May 15, 2019

I hope you had a happy Mother’s Day. This is a tribute to my mother, Martha Austin. Mom was the most wonderful mother in the whole world (I hope you all feel that way about your mothers.) Mom was always there for us; she was a stay-at-home mother, which seems to be rare these days. Maybe we didn’t have all that money can buy, but we always had her time. Mom cooked and baked, both were wonderful. Everything was homemade from scratch and her cookies, doughnuts, cakes, and pies were delicious. Hou...

  • Best fishing of the year

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|May 15, 2019

It’s time. The best fishing of the year is happening right now. But don’t hesitate. It will be over in a flash. There’s a narrow window of time each spring when the rivers are clear and the caddis flies are hatching. The hatch will continue once runoff begins in earnest, however, the angling opportunities will wash downstream with the muddy flow. Hit it right and there will be rafts of spent caddis, thick on the river, making it difficult to keep track of your fly. Hungry trout, feeding on this...

  • The Census is important

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|May 15, 2019

Selling a home is a waiting game. There is a slim chance that we may be here for a while; as long as you’ll have us, we will be happy. Thinking about the possibility of change can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. I love things about living here and one of those things has been the overwhelming responses to our family eventually leaving. We feel very loved and I am happy to feel like we haven’t worn out our welcome. So, in the meantime, we will be here until our house sells. While living here...

    Dale Edward Marshall

    May 15, 2019

Dale Edward Marshall was born March 31, 1956, in Malta, Mont., and died May 6, 2019, in Malta. He was raised 20 miles north of Saco on the Marshall family ranch with his older brother, Dick, and he attended Saco Public School all through his schooling. Though he wasn't the most attentive student, he had basketball and Cecil Sudbrack to keep his grades up. Dale also enjoyed his fair share of shenanigans; one such shenanigan was a "baptism" at the Dumps that involved rolling down the hill and...

  • Old West Beef Empires Launched Town Of Malta

    Hillary Sward, UM Graduate Student|May 15, 2019

U.S. Highway 191 climbs a steep grade out of the Missouri River bottoms north of the bridge at the James Kipp Recreation Area. As it gains the upper extent of the river breaks, a far-reaching, high plains landscape sprawls toward Canada 125 miles to the north. The Little Rockies rise directly ahead, and a rough, rolling prairie flows off to the east. From here, you will experience the vastness of the prairie, seeing firsthand why Montana received the nickname of “Big Sky Country.” Continuing north, you head through historic landscape, once the...

  • Loring News for May 15, 2019

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|May 15, 2019

I know I've been remiss in getting my news into the paper on time. I have it written, but just don't get it sent in. So sorry. The last couple of weeks I've been spending a lot of time with Tom at the Hi-Line Retirement Center. He is receiving good care, and physical therapy, three meals a day. But on the other hand, it is really quiet at my home. I do get to see a few people who I like to visit there, Betty Jo Compton, Debbie Dyrdahl, Lois Waters, who come to visit their loved ones. Bruce and L...

School is just two weeks from being finished for the year and graduation is on Friday the 17th. Dora Henry's great-grandson William was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Philadelphia. Fortunately, the bike suffered more damage than Willie. Good to see Pickles Ereaux home again and out working in her...

  • Should we 'leave it to nature?'

    Ron Stoneberg|May 15, 2019

A wise sage once said something like, "failure to learn from history will generally result in repeating the failures". This is what is happening in northeastern Montana. You have probably heard about the American Prairie Reserve's (APR) plans for an 'American Serengeti' that includes 10 or 20,000 wild, free-roaming bison on 3.5 million acres. Their stated intention is to remove all man-made improvements that have been constructed over the last 200 years (apparently, they consider their 'new' facilities like 'learning centers', yurt camps, camp...
