A big thank you to all our military people who fought for our freedom and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The urge to travel across the coulee and visit my parents’ graves was strong. Since I’m not completely ready to drive myself, I was thankful that Cindy Clark offered to drive. We drove the north road which I haven’t been on for years and it was interesting. The whole area is very dry but the calves that we saw looked good. Just a note that the Border Bar is open in Turner on Thursday throu...

    Lori Taylor, P. C. Museum Curator|Jun 1, 2022

Does anyone recognize the term “Slow Elk”? I’ve been reading old Walt Coburn tales and ran across a remark about Slow Elk. It refers to the practice of never butchering your own beef. In what was a questionable practice- many a ranch had a herd of cattle but when it came time for supper you were generally eating one of the large cow outfits beef. The practice involved butchering the beef, cutting the brand out of the hide, whacking off the telltale earmarks, cutting up the hide and sinking it deep in the muddy waters of a river. What was accep...

Turning compassion into action has always been the Red Cross way, but we certainly don’t do it alone. That’s why we want to thank you for making Red Cross part of your community. When emergencies like the Pine Grove wildfire strike, we meet families’ most immediate needs and let them know they’re not alone. About 90 percent of our workforce are volunteers who train year-round to respond...

A couple of old friends of mine passed away recently. Memorial services are planned for later this summer. I wasn’t there either time. They were cremated, and I received their remains neatly packaged in small cardboard boxes. I was far removed from the spectre of death. Last week I received a message that my friend Old...
