  • County's talent to be on display July 8

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 29, 2016

Phillips County has talent, which in itself isn't new news, but how it will be on display on Friday, July 8 at the Milk River Pavilion will be different than in years past. In a move to increase the types of acts eligible to take the stage, Malta's KMMR Radio station has moved away from the Country Showdown event and this year will host a talent show instead. "We decided that the Showdown had so many rules on it that it excluded a lot of people that could have possibly entered," said KMMR's...

  • 15th Annual Gospel Jam

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 29, 2016

Attendance at the 15th Annual Milk River Gospel Jamboree might have been a touch lower than last year, but that didn't make the Gospel being spread any less special in Malta over the three-day event. "We are having a good time, we have a fine bunch of musicians here and an enthusiastic audience," said MRGJ President John Koss on Sunday afternoon. Malta's Daeson Salveson, Jaydon Fercho and Nathan Salveson all helped set up microphones (and whatever else was asked of them) over the three-day event...

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the site in Fort Peck. Ann Kulczyk of Glasgow chairs the Opening Ceremony committee and she invites everyone to attend this historic event. Guests of honor will be World War 11, Korean War, and disabled veterans and seating will be provided for them....

  • BLM encourages simple steps to avoid starting wildfires on public lands

    Jun 29, 2016

Long days of abundant sunshine and limited rainfall mean that grasses, shrubs and even trees are beginning to dry out in the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains. Whether outside for work or play, individuals need to be careful so their actions don't accidentally spark a wildfire. Something as simple as simple as driving over or parking a vehicle with a hot muffler in high, dry grass can start a fire. So can the use of gasoline powered equipment without a proper spark arrester. Use established f...

  • On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!

    Jun 29, 2016

The Phillips County Library has began its summer reading program, with sign-up starting on Monday, June 26, 2016. Preschoolers, through coming high school seniors; can earn an award for every five hours of reading up to 40 hours. It is not too late to sign up and avoid the “summer slump.” It is with great appreciation that the library thanks its sponsors who make the summer reading program such a success. The library has a selection of various items for all the readers who make the first five hours of reading time. Westside Food Court is mak...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 29, 2016

Phillips County Motorsports held their second weekend of this season on June 18 and 19 despite the high winds blowing against the racers. Havre's Travis Turner was runner up in the SuperPro with a time of 6.16, reaction time of .2366 and a dial-in time of 6.15. "It was working good and the driver didn't do too bad," Schultz said. "The driver wasn't as...

Please be advised the Phillips Co Sheriff’s Office is no longer doing GVW Term permits. These are the yearly permits for the over-width/height/weight that most semi trucks and trailers need. • One hundred helmets passed out

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports|Jun 29, 2016

The opening of Malta Skatepark brought hundreds of people to Malta's Hillcrest neighborhood last Sunday, with a majority of that population being children 18 and under. While many people hit the park on skateboard or scooter, nearly everyone had a form of protection. In order to push safety Mayor Shyla Jones, the Malta Skatepark Committee, along with several other donors donated 100 helmets to those who were chosen through a raffle at the event. "We wanted to make sure all of the kids were safe...

  • 'Best Father's Day present so far!'

    Rob Marchion|Jun 29, 2016

This Father’s Day weekend I was given one of the best Father’s Day presents I could have received. While participating in the 25th annual Quigley Match outside Forsyth, MT, my daughter Brianna Sims of Malta, MT shot a 34 out of a possible 48 winning the Woman’s Division and besting her dad in the process. She also received two straight “8” pins for getting all 8 shots on both targets or as we like to say “cleaning the target”. This year’s match had a record number 698 shooters for the two day... Full story

  • Swim Team headed to Glasgow

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 29, 2016

The Malta Swim team is no doubt, hoping that the weather at this weekend’s meet in Glasgow will have better conditions than last week’s meet in Plentywood. “The Glasgow meet is pretty popular,” Malta Head Coach Cassie Pratt told the PCN. “It’s a good meet that has a nice pool for the swimmers and usually the water’s pretty nice.” Heavy storms ran through Plentywood at the time that the Plentywood Swim Meet was running, with Saturday hosting the worst of the rain. Still, Malta swam well last...
