Last week Dodson Public School Superintendent Gary Weitz sent letters home to students, parents, teachers and other staff informing them of a meeting to discuss the start of school in 2020 with social distancing and CDC recommendation as COVID-19 continues to hamper regular school openings across the US. “At our June school board meeting, I presented a plan for reopening school with student attendance in the brick and mortar building daily beginning on August 19,” Weitz said. “This plan was constructed after constant one on one conve...

    Jul 29, 2020

As of last week, the Albertsons store in Malta has hung posters letting customers know that facemasks must be worn inside the store at all times in an attempt to combat the COVID-19 virus. The posters at the Malta store follow an order on the Albertsons’ corporate website announcing Albertsons Companies is requiring its customers to wear face coverings across all of their locations when shopping at their stores for their protection and for that of their associates. “Throughout this pandemic, the health and safety of everyone who walks thr...

  • Malta Pool sees huge numbers following delayed start

    Jul 29, 2020

At the first Malta City Council meeting of July, Malta Municipal Pool Manager Kelly Cederberg had some pleasant, perhaps surprising news when she updated the council on the pool season. "The pool opened a few days late, but is good to go now," she said. The pool's delayed opening followed construction on the new bathhouse (currently, the pool is using a mobile bathhouse provided by Malta's Duane Murray, saving the City of Malta money) as well as trying to make the pool safe for social...

  • Malta Construction Updates for 7.29.20

    David Veseth, PCN Construction Reporter|Jul 29, 2020

Workers have been putting final touches on the home across from the Phillips County Courthouse which had a basement installed this past winter. It looks nice. A week ago, Short Oil Road was closed so workers could repave portions of it. As far as I know, it has been many years since it was repaved. That works continue this week. Work also continues across from the former location of the NAPA store and I still hear that a new building might be built there in years to come. The building was...

  • This is the end?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Jul 29, 2020

I grow attached to my boats. I still have the Grumman canoe I bought with paper route money when I was 14, but many others have come and gone. The pretty wooden drift boat in which I learned to row is but a memory now. I cashed in a retirement plan to buy that boat and never regretted the decision. The aluminum Smokercraft that Barb and I bought when we first got together is also gone. It took us to dozens of lakes and rivers across Montana. We’ll probably never catch as many fish out of a...

  • Farewell, Facebook, at least until Nov. 4

    Mark Hebert, PCN Publisher|Jul 29, 2020

I paused my Facebook account because I am tired of the hatred and fake news that is posted there. You can call me “triggered” but I argue I am less inclined to be such without this branch of social media …or any social media, for that matter (lest we forget that Facebook owns Instagram.) The amount of stupidity, conspiracy theories, and straight out lies on Facebook are the reason I have pulled that trigger. Couple those aspects along with the political ads (most of which are lies regardless of party) and the perfect storm of contentious quarr...

  • Star News for July 29, 2020

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jul 29, 2020

A comet has been described as a dirty snowball in space that is on an elliptical orbit around the sun. Its cycle takes many years traveling a long ways from the sun before turning back and gradually coming closer to the sun and developing a tail of debris flaring off the main core. Every so often we on earth are given the chance to observe it in the night sky. It is growing less visible as the month of July draws to an end, but I was able to see it a couple of nights. Find the The Big Dipper...
