  • Hi-Line Retirement Center Announces Closure

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 24, 2022

A relatively quiet audience, hopeful of getting some clear, concise answers, filled the dining room at the Hi-Line Retirement Center last Wednesday. Amid rumors and speculation, a captive audience waiting for the word. Duane Murray, Administrator of the HLRC (formerly the Good Samaritan Center), addressed the families, workers and friends gathered after Chaplain Rick Mikkelson provided a prayer and scripture. However, the "word" wasn't what those in attendance were hoping for. Murray first...

  • 2022 Knights of Columbus BBQ held in Trafton Park

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 24, 2022

It was off and running...early. Hurry up and wait. But when it was all said and done, it was worth it. As the saying goes, when it's smokin' it's cooking/ and when it's black it's done. Smiling as they came forward to claim this year's honor, were the Casual Smokers, Cohen Ereaux; his mom, Lynette; sister Nellie; and her boyfriend, Ryan McLaughlin. Their smiles were enhanced by the $1,200 award. "I was a little worried when they (people) weren't showing up", stated Chairman Jory Schipman....

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 24, 2022

Joshua Belanger is one of the faces you want to only meet socially, not on a business level. As an import to both Montana and Malta, he hails from Warrensburg, MO. Meet Josh, the new funeral director at Wilderness Funeral Home. His previous experience was that of a diesel mechanic, then a corrections officer in Great Falls. Take a side step and apply for a job as a mortuary assistant and end up in Malta, MT., after schooling In a business that is one that requires a special level of compassion...

  • Can We Get Some Compassion for our Seniors

    Aug 24, 2022

Dear Editor, The Hi Line Retirement Center is being closed. The CEO of the Hospital and Clinic says there’s no funding, however, he found money to hire 5 new PA’s and started renovating the clinic. It seems like smaller renovations and 2 or 3 PA’s would have been sufficient and the rest of the money given to the Nursing Home. Instead of closing the Nursing Home and getting rid of our Seniors, let’s get rid of the CEO from South Dakota and get a Malta person with a HEART and COMPASSION. The Nursing Home has been open for years. It is home to...

  • Questions about HLRC Closing

    Aug 24, 2022

Dear Editor, I’ve heard some real disappointing stories and I was wondering what you know about the Hi-Line home and our hospital / doctors office? Is, or was, the census at the Hi-Line up near 40 residents recently? Is the door that used to connect the home and the hospital emergency room closed off now? I have seen 2 ladies pushing a gurney through that door and they were running. The patient didn’t have to wait for the ambulance or pay the expense, and the patient was tended to quickly. When my father, my mother and both my wife’s paren...

  • Just Call Me a "Cooler"

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 24, 2022

My friend Smoke has started referring to me as a “cooler.” Like the unlucky individuals employed by casinos to “cool” the action at the gaming tables when someone gets hot, I’m apparently the guy who slows down the hot fishing and hunting. Both headed rapidly downhill shortly after my arrival in Phillips County. I moved here primarily because of the hunting opportunities. The grouse and pheasants were plentiful. Elk and antelope tags were easy to draw. There were deer everywhere. Now the birds...

  • What Do You Mean No Anniversary Gift?

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Aug 24, 2022

Marriage is about trust. And let’s just say that I had issues with that the other day. Last Wednesday, (August 17) was our tenth anniversary, and my wife and I agreed to not buy anything for each other, for the first time in our relationship. I make it a point not to forgot our special day so that I don’t end up like those television husbands that come home empty-handed. Every year, we would say not to buy each other any gifts, but this year, we actually did it. Well. Kind of. We did not buy...

  • Marlyn Gloyne Orahood (March 10, 1937– August 19, 2022)

    Aug 24, 2022

Her Journey's Just Begun Don't think of her as gone away, her journey's just begun Life holds so many facets, this earth is only one. Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days or years. Think how she must be wishing that we could know today How nothing but our sadness, can really pass away. And think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched For nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much. Author Unknown Marlyn Gloyne Orahood was born March 10, 1937, t...

Again, Smokey the Bear says, “Beware of fires.” I can’t believe it’s the middle of August. Happy Birthday to all celebrating. School started here in Whitewater on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. There is one new teacher for this school year. (I’ll get name and more information on school soon.) Good luck to Hannah Hanley (WHS 2022 grad...

They are traveling in a motor home and have been on the road for two and a half months, having started out on Memorial Day and have made it home now. • Coffee Central Opens its Door!

    Pierre Bibbs, Publisher|Aug 24, 2022

Last Saturday, August 20, roughly 400 customers stepped into the northeast door of the Villa Theatre building to welcome Coffee Central, Malta's newest coffee shop to the community for its grand opening. "It was crazy," said Coffee Central owner Kelsie Harms. "If Tessa (Handley, her sister-in-law) wasn't here to help me, I would have been crying in the corner. She ran the till, I ran the coffee, and it was great!" Harms, the daughter of Mark and Donna Handley, and wife of Noah Harms, is a 2011...
