Happy New Year 2022! A brand-new year, let’s hope and pray that 2022 will be better than last year. Do you make New Year’s resolutions? If so, they are made to be broken! I hope you all had a nice Christmas, I did! Whitewater school had a Christmas program on Monday the 13th. It was about Santa’s reindeer. It reminded me of when I was in the 6th grade. Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Dec 29, 2021

Happy new year to all my readers. As I write this the temperature is -17 with a wind chill of -37. Unfathomable to most people. I am staying in today. But I look out and see some of the sharp tail grouse hunkered down in the pine trees. Their feathers are fluffed out to trap the air to help them stay warm. Every day this week it seems snow has blanketed the grassland. We don’t have a huge amount, but every bit of moisture is welcome! All the Lumsden girls were at Pete and Carol Lumsdens for C...

  • It's not that I don't like people

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 29, 2021

As we drove north the temperature headed south. We’d spent a few days visiting friends and family in Livingston, shopped a bit in Bozeman, and were on our way home to Malta. It’s always fun to see the economic vitality and growth in that part of the state, but it’s become another one of those places that are nice to visit but I sure wouldn’t want to live there. Instead, I live in a place few folks visit, and fewer still want to make their home. However, that’s a big part of the appeal for me. I...

Marc Kloker, MT FWP Region 6|Dec 29, 2021

Although bear encounters are rare in most of FWP Region 6, there are known black bears present in the Little Rockies and the Bears Paw Mountains, and more recently, some (likely) black bear sign and sightings have been reported near Malta. Black bears are occasionally found wandering far from their traditional areas, and preventative measures should always be taken to prevent wildlife encounters. In the last month, especially since the...
