M-ettes second at Cal Wearley meet, Mustangs seventh

The Cal Wearley Invitational went down last Wednesday, April 9, and the young Mustangs and M-ettes fared well, considering the amount of youth on the team.

Sophia Stiles, a freshman, ran like she stole something at the Cal Wearley Memorial. The freshman has won three events in the first track and field meet of her young career.

She led the Malta M-ettes to second place at the meet. The team had 65 points total. Havre won the meet scoring 82. The host North Star was third with 62,

Stiles ran a 16.40 time the 100 meter hurdles, which is something most can’t run without hurdles. She also won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 49.60.

“My 100 hurdles time could have been better, because my start was really bad,” Stiles told the PCN, noting that she could use more practice on coming off the blocks.

The thing about Stiles is not only can she outrun most, she can out jump them her third first place finish was in long jump, where she leaped 16’1”, with her closest competition nearly a foot short of the mark. She placed third in the triple jump with a length of 34” 5.50”, which was a tie with North Star’s Bettie Carlon who placed second with the same distance.

Stiles was also a part of the 4 X 100 relay team, which consists of Marley Manoukian, Darby Schye, Stiles, and Mary Grace Kalal placed third with a time of 56.10.

Malta’s B team (Jada Nicholson, Rheanna Messerly, Adrianna Bibeau and Raleigh Hunter) placed ninth with a time of 1:01.40.

The 4 X 400 team consisting of Manoukian, Bibeau, Nicholson, and Riley Mortenson placed sixth with a time of 5:08.50.

Darby Schye took first in the shot put with a toss of 34’4.50” two, which was nearly two feet further than Havre’s Martha Stocker who finished second in the event. She had a time of 28.70 in the prelim round of the 200 meter dash, which was good enough for fifth, but she did not participate in the final round. Schye also placed seventh in the 100 meter dash prelims with a time of 14.10.

In her first high school track meet Jada Nicholson placed third in the high jump with a leap of 4’8”.

Marley Manoukian leaped 14’6” (Personal Best) to secure a fifth place finish at the meet. She is showing signs of improvement, jumping nearly one foot longer than she did in last week’s Glasgow Invitational. Manoukian placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 53.20. She also placed ninth in the 100 meter hurdles posting a time of 18.70.

Mary Grace Kalal had a good showing in the javelin event throwing 86’9” and earning seventh in the event... The kicker is that she and teammate Adrianna Bibeau, who placed ninth with a throw of 81’8” had the best scores amongst B and A schools. Class C took the event with Hollee Meek of Simms taking first followed by Geraldine high and Chinook following.

Riley Mortenson is heating up. She posted a new personal best in the 1600 and 800 meter races. She took fifth in the 1600 with a time of 6:22.40. She placed 11th in the 800, with a time of 2:49.90.

Rheanna Messerly tied with Shelby’s Allisa Buck for tenth in the 300 meter hurdles, posting a time of 59.10.

Shay Garfield is showing improvement in shot put, as she threw the weight 27’7”, almost one foot further than last week’s meet. She placed 13th in the event.

The team has shown improvement in the second meet. Sophia Stiles has shown that she can compete and will help put up points against the numerous points Glasgow will have in meets due to their multitude of athletes.

MUSTANGS

The Mustangs scored a team total of 9.5 in the Cal Wearley, thanks in part to the quality of athletes coming from the C Class this year.

Senior Kyle Mitchell, led the Mustangs, placing within the top six in the 100 and 200 events. He was also a leg in both relay teams.

The 4 X 100 relay team (Mitchell, Ostin Welch, Caleb (Green) Salveson and Tyson Carney) placed fourth at the meet with a time of 49.40.

The 4 X 400 team (Jalen Lamb, Welch, Mitchell, and Salveson) ran a 4:10.70 and placed seventh in the event.

Mitchell placed fourth in the 200 meter dash finals, with a time of 24.30, the same time earned him a spot in the finals.

He also placed sixth in the 100 finals with a time of 11.60. His final time was an improvement on his preliminary time of 12.10.

Tyson Carney placed sixth in the javelin, with a toss of 132’1”.
