Headline: American Prairie Foundation to open office

The American Prairie Foundation, which recently purchased a large ranch in southern Phillips County, is looking to establish a field office in Malta.

Formed three years ago, the foundation’s purchase of a ranch in Phillips County represents it first land acquisition in Montana and the US on the way of fulfilling its mission of restoring a northern prairie ecosystem.

…Scott Laird said Phillips County is one of the few areas left in America where open areas of grass prairie are fundamentally still intact.

Headline: GN under new management

“We hope to build up the GN Motel Hotel so it is a greater asset to Malta and Phillips County.”

Larry Legare, born and raised around Glasgow, took over management of the hotel Thursday. He has purchased a portion of stock with option to buy balance from Ed Judge of Lewistown.

Former experience included last year troubleshooting for a motel chain in California, and working and learning the trade in a motel on Flathead Lake. Between those times he was employed by the John Deere Agency in Glasgow.

Lagare is married to the former Bea Murr of Glasgow and their four children are Mrs. Dave (Brenda) Rummel of Zortman, Karen Martin of Havre and Larry and Robert Legare of Glasgow and Havre.

Headline: Contractor starts work on New Malta Armory

The Chris Fuglevand Construction Company of Havre moved into Malta this week and work on the $100,000 National Guard Armory just south of Malta on Highway 191 was started this morning. The basic bid of the Havre construction company was $68,750.

The contractors hope to complete the job this year. The new armory will be of structural tile and will contain a lobby, three offices, three classrooms, a drill floor, kitchen shower room, storage room and rifle range. All national Gaurad vehicles will be stored behind the building in space enclosed with a nine-foot security fence.

The Fuglevand Company constructed the Malta Lutheran Church several years ago.

Headline: Defective brakes cause numerous arrests

Several drivers were ticketed by the highway patrol for driving cars with defective breaks this last week. Each were fined three dollars in the court of Justice E. T. Peterson.

Drivers arrested were C. O. Brandon, Malta; William Robertson, Dodson; Charles H. Stewart and Mrs. M. Ostlund, Malta.

Personals: Roller skating every night this week, 7 till 11, at Malta Bowling Alley.

Headline: Indian Princess Coming

Among the Indians with the Texas Bill’s Wild West, which is a part of the Enormous Yankee Robinson Three Ring Circus, is Princess “Kiowa,” noted as one of the greatest rifle shots and rope throwers in the world. This is her first season en tour. She appears at every performance of the Wild West and is delighted with her first trip through civilization. She talks English fluently and lady visitors to the Indian camp can have a few entertaining moments by engaging her in conversation in Malta, Tuesday, July 7.

On sale: At G. W., Hewitt this week, buy a Ford Roundabout for $560 or a Ford touring car for $620.
