Phillips County News welcomes Brookie to staff as intern

The Phillips County News would like to introduce our new reporting intern to the staff as Matthew Brookie joins our news team.

Brookie is a 2011 graduate of Malta High School and is the son of Janeen and Hugh Brookie. Janeen works at the Phillips County Library and Hugh is a farmer and rancher near Saco.

Since graduation, Brookie studied engineering at the Montana State University in Bozeman before deciding that vocation wasn't his cup of tea.

"That is just something I didn't think I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life," said Brookie. "So I took a year off and that turned into two years. I think I finally know what I want to do."

Brookie is currently trying to get accepted into Full Sail University in Florida and will be taking online courses in creative writing all the while writing stories, taking pictures and doing layout work at the PCN.

"I would like to eventually work my way up to being a novelist," he said. I think (working at the PCN) is a good launching point."

Brookie said that he enjoys reading and writing about politics and has a passion for investigative journalism. On the non-fiction side of writing, Brookie said he is a fan of fantasy and science fiction writers and hopes to one day pen novels in that genre, but to also mix-in realism. Brookie attributes his passion for reading and writing to his mother, the librarian.

"She got me started at a young age," admitted Brookie.

After leaving college, Brookie started a job at Albertsons where he currently works as a meat cutter...among other duties. While he works his regular 9-to-5, Brookie will be a valuable member of the PCN's news staff and we are very excited to have him on our team covering our community.
