Carolyn Schmoeckel retires

A party was held for Malta City Clerk and Treasurer Carolyn Schmoeckel last Thursday as she spent her final afternoon at the place she had worked for the past 26 years. Though she said she was happy to be retiring, she will obviously miss her position as when she addressed the crowd of 30 or so well-wishers, she welled up with tears.

"This is an emotional day for me," she said. "I never thought I would be leaving this job ... but it is time to move on."

She said that perhaps it was time to become a snowbird – she even said Vince, her husband, could come too – and that her years working for the city have been very fulfilling.

"I have always loved my job with the city," she said. "It is going to be strange not coming to work anymore."

Before Schmoeckel addressed the crowd, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones thanked the retiree for her dedication to the town of Malta.

"I could have never done this job without her," Mayor Jones said. "She knows her stuff, inside and out, and we are going to be lost for a little while without her."

Mayor Jones said that it is hard for people to understand exactly how much work Schmoeckel did and she always got it done.

"It is amazing," said Mayor Jones. "She always met her deadlines, her budgets were always balanced. She did a tremendous, tremendous job at this position and she is going to be very hard to replace."

Following a presentation of a plaque honoring her 26 years of service, the crowd shared beverages and cake with Schmoeckel.

"You will see me around, here and there," she promised.
