Headline: Grass Fire Burns over land near Malta

A grass fire that for a time endangered the buildings on the former R.H. Jones farm south-west of Malta Monday night destroyed more than two sections of range. A force of more than 20 men worked for several hours before the flames were pinched out.

The farm is now owned by Senator Fred L. Robinson. The cause of the fire is uncertain but since it started in the vicinity of the bridge near the mouth of the Alkali Creek, it is assumed that a carelessly tossed cigarette stub did the job.

Whitewater School News: Softball seems to be the lead-ing pastime of the students during their time out. It would probably take a softball expert to even recognize the game, but softball is what it is known as.

It is expected that basketball practice will start this week. The team was slightly broken up when Pete and Stub Pehlke and Helmer Bakke left us, be we still have Orville Fjeldheim, Bob Brandt, Kieth Johnson and Milton Pelhke, all veterans of past basketball wars.

Editor’s Note: There are no editions of the Phillips County News for October, 1964 at the Phillips County Museum. If you have any copies of those papers, the museum would love to add them to their archives.

Headline: Mark “Noah” Niebur built his ark in just under seven years.

The critics laughed at Noah too, but he got the last laugh.

Malta’s Mark “Noah” Niebur may not have been laughing, but he was smiling on Saturday.

“We floated the boat,” he said.

Niebur has been handcrafting a 27-foot cabin cruiser almost from scratch in his son’s metal farm building just south of town.

Smaller than Noah’s undertaking, Mark’s Ark was still a lengthy project by modern standards –“six years, 10 months, nine days,” Niebur quipped.
