Additional locals: The city council at Malta last week passed an ordinance closing every business house in the city on Sunday. The only exception being the Orpheum Theatre. In this, they showed good judgment. The Orpheum at Malta is owned and operated by Mr. Penny and Mr. Wilson and is conducted along the same good lines as our own little theatre, and any house so conducted is a credit to any town. A city made up of all lines of business and a place of clean amusement is just as necessary as the church or any other institution. – Havre Plaindealer

Headline: Write-ins decide election results

Little interest was shown in last week’s Philips County Elections. A lack of candidates in both Dodson and Saco forced a count of write-in votes to fill positions for mayor and town council members.

In Dodson, Dale Dvorshak won the mayor position with 18 votes. Jerry Lankford had 17 and Ted Vogel 12, to fill council seats.

Saco elected Walt Scoles as mayor with 27 write-in votes, and Howard Pippen and Jeanne Marinko have accepted council positions with 24 and 13 votes, respectively.

Dodson News: Katty Anderson, Sissy Cuts The Rope and Kathryn James and their parents were honored at the basketball tournament in Glasgow when the girls each received a star quilt from the Frazer team. Many from Dodson attended the tournament.

Local voter turnout in the November 2 general election was 78 percent in Phillips County, according to Election Administrator Laurel Hines.

Hines said the percentage would reach about 89 percent if inactive voters didn’t have to be counted.

“It was the best as far back as I’ve looked,” said Hines.
