Mustangs sweep javelin at Cal Wearley and Lions meet

The Malta Mustangs track team took fifth at the Havre Lions meet last Saturday and seventh at the Cal Wearley Memorial last Wednesday, April 8.

Malta has a trio of javelin throwers who have all placed in the top six spots in the event in either of the meets last week.

Jace Bishop set the tone taking first at the Cal Wearley with a throw of 156-05. The throw is Bishop's new personal best.

Before he even had his first throw, Bishop, knew where he wanted to hit and he surpassed his goal.

"I'm looking for 155," Bishop said.

Before the Cal Wearley Bishop had hit 154 at state last season as a personal best.

Bishop finished second at the Havre Lions meet, with a throw of 144-7.

Keenan Schipman took first at the Havre Lions meet, with a throw of 146-3. Schipman took sixth at the Cal Wearley, with a throw of 132-06.

Tyson Carney took second at the Cal Wearley with a throw of 146-11. He took fourth at the Havre Lions meet, with a throw of 138-07.

Carney also placed sixth in pole vault after clearing 9-06 at the Havre. He cleared 9-00 at the Cal Wearley meet.

In his third year of doing the event, Carney, a junior, plans on attempting the pole vault all season, rather than sparingly throughout the season as he did in his freshman and sophomore year.

"Kaden Bedwell actually talked to me about doing it," Carney said.

The best Carney has been able to do is 10-00 last year at divisionals and for now that is his current goal.

He explained the proper technique of pole vaulting.

"When you go over you have to lock out your right and left arm and jump, go through, keep the pole close to your body."

He admitted that he is supposed to turn but he doesn't because he isn't used to the motion.

Jase Galt has had a strong showing in the triple jump, taking fifth at the Havre Lions meet, with a length of 36-05 and taking sixth at the Cal Wearley with a distance of 38-08.50.

The long relay team consisting of Ostin Welch, Carney, Allen Williamson and Galt took second at both meets. The team had a time of 3:47.50 at the Cal Wearley meet and 3:50.80 at the Havre Lions meet.

Devon Raybon took fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 47.5 at the Cal Wearley.
