Car show kicks off busy weekend in Malta

The First State Bank of Malta will be hosting it's 12th Annual Car Show this Saturday, June 6 rain or shine. Admission to the public is free and is only five dollars to register a car to show.

"I've registered the cars every year and there have been some years where it's raining and I will tell them it'll be five dollars to stand in the rain and their remarks are usually we love this and we don't care if it's raining," said Terry Skones, Vice President of FSB Malta and Treasurer of Phillips County Motorsports.

The event kicks off a fun-filled weekend that includes Drag Races Saturday and Sunday, Flower Show Saturday at 10 a.m., Duck Races Saturday at 3 p.m and The highly anticipated Hell's Belle's concert which is comprised of an all girl A/C D/C tribute band which will be held at the Milk River Pavilion at 7 p.m.

The event features cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors and even high performance racers that will hit the Hi-Line Dragstrip later in the day.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. the day of the event for anyone wanting to show off their vehicle. The event officially starts at 11 a.m. after streets are blocked off.

"We usually don't preregister," said Skones. "It seems like a busy day. Some people come down and hang out all day."

The event will have many favorite vendors at the event including Crossroad Coffee and Kiwanis, who sell hamburgers, fries and drinks.

All are welcome to sell any item they wish at the event, providing the vendor set up and tear down their own tables.

"We just tell people the more, the merrier because we do sponsor it as far as getting the street closed," Skones said. "We don't charge for that. Set up a table and we hope you do well."

Skones even went as far as to say Flea Market venders are welcome.

"There's going to be a good crowd, so it is a good time to come down," she said.

There is however one concrete rule to being a vendor.

"The only thing that we do mention is that because the street is blocked off, you have to be able to get in early enough if you need to get close to the park otherwise it can be pretty difficult," Skones said. "We're running these cars in the back area and for safety purposes we don't want a lot of distractions."

The main concern is public safety, so if you bring items to sell be there before or at 9:00 a.m.

PCMS (Phillips County Motorsports) will be sponsoring jet cars and Alcohol race cars for the event as well as demonstrations in the afternoon, so please bring ear protection if needed because these racers are loud!

As far as awards go, the presentation will begin at around 2 p.m. The criteria for the awards will be People's Choice, the Longest Distance award and the Darryl Seeley award, which is awarded to the best pickup truck chosen by the Seeley family.

There will also be six awards determined by judges that know vehicles inside and out. Those individual winners will be notified of their award but will not receive those awards until a later date.

Voting for the People's Choice award begins at 11 a.m. the same time the event starts.
