Shaw always on the job

Frank Dalk and John Lester were arrested last Monday evening by Sheriff Shaw for carrying concealed weapons and taken to Malta where they received a sentence of 100 days in the county jail. The two were standing in the Palaco Saloon when Sheriff Shaw entered. He had been suspicious of the pair earlier in the evening and had them under his surveillance for some time.

When attempting to arrest, one of them tried to pull a gun from his pocket but was frustrated by quick action of John Gillespie who seized the gun before it could be brought into play.

Two guns of .44 caliber, a file and a small bottle of nitro glycerin was found on the pair. But for the prompt action of the Sheriff in arresting them, it is safe to say that some place or somebody in Saco would have been held up on that night.

Saco Squash headed for

Japanese tables

A Japanese family may sit down to dinner of Kabocha squash this winter – squash grown in Saco, Mont.

A semi-load of the popular squash will soon be bound from Saco to Seattle where it will be loaded into a cargo box and shipped to Japan for sale.

The plots have been small this far. Darrell Menge, who operates the Frist Creek Ranch east of Saco, raised 4.2 acres of the squash this summer and is optimistic but reserved thus far. The six local growers, Menge, Audie Simpson, Clint Simpson and Craig Burnham, have contracts in which Tenex Inc. (Tennessee) promises to pay 15-cents a pound for those squash which meet specifications.

Letter to the Editor; The first monkey I ever saw

I'm guessing about 1965, I for some unknown reason was in the Montana Hotel lobby. There sat Ed Young at his old roll top desk, on top of the desk was a monkey. The only one I'd ever seen...

My dad bought that desk when it was sold and I am sitting at it now in my home writing this note.

Editor's note (1990): The writer has reference to the picture of Ed Young we ran a few weeks back, asking for comment. We've had several.
