Malta School Notes

Owing to the severe coldness of the winter some difficulty is being encountered in keeping the schoolhouse warm. On Wednesday of this week the upstairs rooms were dismissed at the morning recess. It would not be a crime if parents kept their children at home on 50 degree below mornings.

Many cases of frozen ears, hands, feet, etc., came to notice among the children. Yesterday morning each teacher spent a great deal of time undoing the work of J. Frost. The most serious case was that of John Garland, who froze a foot quite badly.

Disastrous fire at Hinsdale

Our neighboring town of Hinsdale was visited by a disastrous fire last Friday morning which entirely destroyed the Heideman Block. The butcher shop of Frank Drabbs, the post office, a restaurant and electric light plant and the plant of the Hinsdale Tribune were all entirely destroyed. The fire caused a loss of about $5,000.

Local News

Since the organization of Phillips County there has been 72 licensees to wed granted by Clerk of Court Porter and one and seventy declarations to become citizens taken out. Not so bad for a county only eleven months old.

J.A. Ferris has opened a cigar store and card parlor in the store building in the Fifth Avenue Hotel building. He will soon put a billiard table in and conduct a strictly up-to-date place of amusement.

Some of our Leap Year girls might get quick results in answering an advertisement in the Glasgow Courier by a young man who wants a wife. Money and age make no difference with him. The only sticker to be seen in the ad is that the lady elect must build the fires in the mornings and this is poor weather to pull off a stunt of that kind.

Found: A tooth; prehistoric molar; where's owner?

A molar belonging either to Paul Bunyan or some prehistoric monster has been causing much speculation as to its origin since members of a WPA crew uncovered it last Friday morning in the county gravel pit three miles northeast of the city.

The partly fossilized object from some creature's jaw was found in a 40-foot cut of the hill and was found sandwiched between a layer of gumbo clay and gravel by workman. The roots of the tooth were pointing toward the diggers and the blow a pick broke the tooth nearly in half before the worker could recognize it.

8-page school paper published by Whitewater students

Whitewater school students last week published the first issue of the Whitewater Whistler, an 8-page edition composed of newsy comments on school activities and town industry.

A chronology of the past year notes the completion of the school's spacious gymnasium which is used for both school and community activities, improvements at the hotel and restaurant, both now being completely modern; both new bridge and grade across Whitewater Creek, a new pool hall and modern improvements to a number of residences.

Ed Young owns fossil molar mentioned in '25 years ago' (100 years ago in this week's memories.)

From the files 25 years ago last week it was mentioned a molar belonging to some prehistoric moster had been found at the county gravel pit.

The large chunk of enamel is nearly a foot in length and eight and one-half inches in width. A report from 25 years ago states: ...the fossil is a molar tooth of a mammoth. As you may know, the mammoth is an extinct, long haired elephant and are not to be confused with the mastodon."

M-Ettes shake off Christmas rust to go to 7-0

The Malta M-ettes may have had a case of "Christmas rust" with 17 days off between games, but they played well enough to defeat arch rival Wolf Point 37-32 to begin post holiday basketball and followed that with a 63-30 win over Plentywood.

Laramie Schwenke and Kelly Pankratz led the squad with 13 points each. Kylee Denham added 5, Ann Harms 4 and Katie Lowney 2.
