Duck boats bought

The Milk River Gun Club has purchased several duck boats of the latest patterns and will have them at the clubhouse this fall for the use of the members. Parties not owning boats have had a hard time in getting around on the lake. This will add greatly to the convenience of the club members and their friends.

Phillips

George Hammond arrived with his household goods Monday and will make his home near Phillips.

Helen Brown was taken to Malta Saturday in a very serious condition for an operation and she is improving. Helen is a great favorite in the community and all are hoping for her speedy recovery.

Canned Willie

In an Encyclopedia of Military Terms, just published by Canadian troops serving in France, an old staple army article, corned beef, is given the name of "bully."

Members of the United States Marine Corp, who publish no encyclopedia, call the same thing "Canned Willie," and they point out that troops all over the world have different and expressive terms, describing the tinned corned beef product.

Our Marines give no reason for their "Canned Willie" version of the corned beef affair, other than that they try to be original in all things, and that, in going about the world in performance of duty, they learn what the other fellow is doing in a nicknaming way and are able to keep up to the minute.

Red Cross Chapter receives letter from

London, Eng.

The local Red Cross Chapter has received a letter from the Woman's Voluntary Services for Civil Defense in London, England, thanking the chapter members for the contributions made to the British.

The letter stated that "every man, woman and child is playing a definite part in the battle which is now raging, and it is because of your help and sympathy that the battle is less bitter, suffering is less severe, strain is less acute." Work by the Red Cross in maintaining canteens and war nurseries was commented upon as well as contributions of clothing and other articles.

Wrong Noise!

A report in the News last week stated that short blasts on the siren of the fire truck would be used for notifying people to shut off their out-side water. This is an error and should have stated that when the siren blows, except at the 9:30 curfew, persons should shut off their outside water.

Hanson, an expert machinist, built the steamer in his spare time during the past several years. The machine work, incidentally, was done on a lathe that Hanson also built himself.

Compton is the owner of a Case steam engine which is in tip-top shape and is used in parades and in Compton's annual steam threshing bee.

Tornado warning will sound in Malta

Because of unstable weather conditions in the area recently, the Phillips County Sheriff's and Disaster and Emergency Services Supervisor Clark Kelly have made arrangements for the siren in Malta to be sounded as a tornado alert.

If a tornado is sighted coming toward Malta, the dispatch will ring the manual siren. It will be left of the top of the cycle for 10-15 seconds. After it has quit for five seconds, it will ring again. It will be left on the top of the cycle for another 10-15 seconds.

The siren will be rung night or day of a tornado is sighted.

Phone booth, antique or just eye sore?

Thanks to the ever present call phone, the old fashioned phone booth has gone the way of the dinosaur as the decrepit remnant of a once functioning phone booth located on the corner of Central Avenue and 1st Street West in Malta.

Another abandoned pay phone further south on Central is in similar disrepair.
