One Nation, Under God

The Great Bee Massacre

I could almost label each year based on some type of wild intruder that gets into our house. The first year wasn’t so much an inside intruder as much as it was mosquitoes.

The second year however, we found a couple of mice (that we know of) and after some d-Con, a couple of traps and some foam the problem was solved.

This year unfortunately we have found out that the native bumble bee or more specifically a group of Hunt’s Bumble Bees have made residence under our front door.

I did see one go under the door a couple of weeks ago and thought, aw it’s no big deal.

As it turns out it was a pretty big deal because they have been getting in the house. With a toddler that can be a big deal.

So, I have been taking these things out left and right. I put down some poison near their entrance. I’m fifty percent sure it’s been working but we’ve still been seeing one a day. Luckily we’ve caught them all before PJ could.

I do appreciate bees and nature but when it comes to the safety of my boy, I’ve had to do some things I’m not proud of; mainly just killing bees.

The confusing thing is I haven’t been able to pinpoint where their hive is.

Wasps I could kill all day with no remorse. But it’s so sad when I have to step on or zap a bumble bee.

In finding these bees I now have a better understanding of them. For the most part it seems that they are docile and maybe even a bit curious.

When we first moved into our house I saw a couple of Hunt’s Bees and thought wow! These are amazing because I had never seen a bee with a couple of orange stripes in the abdomen. They are a little intimidating because of their size but never did I think I would be living with them.

It’s a crazy problem. It’s not as nasty as a roach infestation but I have lost some sleep over it.

If they were wasps, I think we would either be moving or I would’ve accidently blown the house up. Seriously though, where is the Orkin man or perhaps Milk River Honey?
