One Nation, Under God

A long trip home

So, I’m going home or have already been home. As I sit at my office typing this I am dreading this 24 hour trip I am about to take my family on.

Though I love the destination, the long drive is more than undesirable. The fact that we are making the drive with a two-year-old that needs his fair share of exercise on any given day, concerns me.

Our boy isn’t quite potty trained yet, so he doesn’t voice his opinion of when he needs to go to the bathroom and when he does go to the bathroom finding a suitable changing situation can be challenging.

Then there’s the nighttime driving. The road lines can almost lull you to sleep if you’re not careful.

Traveling is also expensive. I almost cringe every time I have to stop and fill-up and Lord help us if we blow a tire.

I have a love-hate thing with the food in Chicago. I love the food when I get there but when I get home, I know it’s time to buckle down and start working out again.

I can’t wait to see my old friends, family and hopefully my city. The place has a different vibe when you’re from around there.

Hoping not to spend a lot of money but I can’t wait to find more Bears stuff and take Susan and PJ to my old favorite restaurants.

One thing I’m really looking forward to is my son playing with my best friend’s children. Last year it was a weird sight to see our kids together playing without a worry in the world.

I’m looking to get away from the politics and focus on the family that I don’t get to see at all anymore other than through Skype or Facebook. I will have to see if I can count the new gray hairs on my parent’s head. I’m looking forward to seeing the town that I’ve called home for most of my life…

Of course, it will be good to see my brother’s dog, Butch, who is a friendly boxer-pit mix.

Sometimes, it’s just good to go home despite the journey. Let’s hope I can say that on the other side.
