One Nation, Under God

Holy Cow! Cubs Win!

I’m a White Sox fan, so I had lukewarm feelings about the Cubs winning the World Series last Wednesday night.

I found myself honestly wanting to cheer for the Cubs throughout the MLB post-season, but I couldn’t do it. I remember thinking that they would just blow it like they have in past seasons.

I’ll admit it I was wrong. There was no better team than the Cubs in 2016 and even though they fell behind 3-1 to Cleveland in the World Series, they seemed destined to win.

It took a rain delay in game seven to completely kill Cleveland’s momentum but ultimately they played better and put millions of Cub fans frustrations to rest.

Of course their victory now means that the White Sox are Chicago’s second team once again because the Cubs are chock full of talent and unless newly promoted manager Rick Renteria can turn the White Sox around, the organization will sit in the Cubs shadow for years to come.

I now believe I feel what Cubs fans felt in 2005, when the White Sox made Chicago baseball relevant again by winning that World Series after a dominant 11-1 post-season that ended with the Sox sweeping Houston in the chipper.

I am almost old enough to have seen every professional Chicago sports team win a championship. This includes the Cubs, Blackhawks, White Sox, Bulls and Fire (soccer).

That leaves one team I wasn’t old enough to see win a championship. Though I have a few favorite sports teams, the Bears are my favorites but I have yet to see them hoist the Lombardi Trophy over their collective heads.

I hope I don’t have to wait until I’m in my seventies to see a Bears championship win, but it sure seems like they may be the next Chicago sports team to have a 100 year title drought. Like many Cubs fans from the 1910’s and beyond, I hope I can see a Bears Super Bowl win before I die.
