One Nation, Under God

You will be missed

Some sad news hit my family the other day. My godmother passed away and I have been pretty bummed out.

I am thankful that my parents are still alive and that we never needed to use her for finding a new home after the unthinkable happened.

My godmother was one of my mother’s best friends growing up and she was named godmother for myself and my two brothers growing up.

She became one of our favorite adult figures growing up.

She was a strong spiritual figure, praying for us every day, even before her death. Every once in a while, we would go to her church and no this was not a one hour service. Sunday service was an all day event and I remember getting out of church at 8 p.m.

She took us all over the Chicago-land area, whether it would be to a movie theatre, all you can eat buffet or skating rink. She would often bring her nephew and niece, giving us childhood friends that became family.

Some of my fondest childhood memories have been with my godmother and due to my parents’ work schedule it seemed like we were always able to find something fun to do with her in the summertime.

She always seemed to find some ridiculous coupon to the best that Chicago had to offer including the area’s top amusement parks.

In every area of my life I felt that there was always someone praying for me and I believe that she was that person.

Unfortunately my godmother has been sick for a long time. I’m not even old enough to know when it started but she would binge eat every meal.

It was a gift and a curse because she took us to a lot of different places to eat but I remember as a kid our family driving past a buffet two hours after we would leave and her car would still be parked outside.

It was something that I always hoped that she would overcome her battle with obesity but it wasn’t meant to be.

It is easy to judge or make fun of a large person but being severely obese is a serious condition. She had a few health problems that probably could’ve ended her life before I graduated but I am thankful to have had such a loving and God fearing lady as my godmother.
