Open Class entries up to 2,528 at 102nd PC Fair

Open class entries were up in 2017 (exceeding even the lofty numbers posted at the 100th event two years ago) and surged past the 2,500 total at this year's Phillips County Fair, due in large part to a couple select groups of exhibitors.

"Usually, the sewing wall has like two things but this year both Malta Colonies brought the bulk of the entries and the Hutterites supported that area very well in sewing and in that (needlework) building," said Phillips County Fair's Joy Linn. "The Malta Boys and Girls Club is active and had a large list of kids that bring us lots of stuff and then the 4-H office, Ann and Marko, are good about getting the younger siblings of 4-H kids, who can't get in like their older brothers and sisters, get those younger kids involved and enter things into the open class."

The number of exhibitors climbed to 322 this year (298 last year) and the total entries judged soared to 2,528, 390 more than last year's fair, and 276 more entries than the 100th Annual Phillips County Fair celebrated in 2015.

"Oh my gosh, we are just so happy with the turnout this year," Linn added.

Nearly 36-percent of the $17,551 in premiums offered was paid out at this year's fair as $5,680 was paid out. Needlework/Art Hobbies had 126 exhibitors enter 1,070 projects and were paid out a total of $2,338 (nearly 41-percent of the premiums offered.) The School category saw six schools enter 492 items and were awarded $466; grains, grass, vegetables and fruit saw 56 exhibitors enter 361 projects and earn $873; culinary had 54 exhibitors enter 336 entries which were awarded $882; floriculture had 61 exhibitors enter 239 projects to be awarded $862; livestock had 16 exhibitors enter 16 projects to be awarded $109 and there were three community exhibits to earn all $150 available.

Individually, Rose Teske once again was the top money earner in open class earning, bringing in $176 (slightly down from her 2016 total of $198.) Teske said that she generally enters into the vegetable categories but this year found enough time to also enter many flower projects. Teske said that some of the flowers she had hoped to enter (including lilies) had turned bad earlier than usual because of the extreme heat and the drought that is currently plaguing the county this summer.

Linn said that next year some new categories will be added to Open Class while others will be revamped. The Phillips County News will team with Linn to highlight the additions and modifications when next year's premium book is set to print.
