100 years ago

November 15, 1917

This is part of the Thanksgiving Proclamation made by President Woodrow Wilson:

"Therefore I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of American, do herby designate Thursday, the twenty-ninth day of November, as a day of Thanksgiving and prayer, and invite all people throughout the land to cease upon that day from their homes and places of worship to render thanks to God, the great ruler of nations."

One of the most enjoyable affairs of many years occurred last evening when friends surprised Mr. and Mrs. George Chambers and Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Trafton. The occasion being both couples anniversary. Those who helped with the program were: Mr. Weikle, violin solo; Joe Sklower, toast; Mrs. Stratton, toast on The New Woman and The old Man; Mrs. Emma Campbell song, "Kutchy, Kutchy, Koo": and Mr. Chambers, response, Who Popped the Question?

The Landusky School was rated as one of the best in the state by Mr. Reinoche, state inspector of rural schools.

Clerk and Recorder Schneider has been busy the past two weeks getting registration cards in shape for the next draft.

November 12, 1942

Rainbow Girls entertain mothers at banquet

The Malta Order of Rainbow Girls were hostesses at a banquet last Friday night at the Masonic Hall.

Carla Robertson, worthy advisor, was toastmaster and welcomed the mothers. Mrs. Harold Genger and the group sang pep songs and the girls entertained their mothers with a short program after the banquet. About 50 mothers and daughters attended.

Navy man home after harrowing experiences

After having his boat sunk and spending three days adrift in a lifeboat, Melvin Spraggins, seaman first class, from telegraph Creek , was granted furlough to come home for 14 days. He arrived here last Saturday and must report back in New York on Nov. 16.

On Sept. 23 he was in the ill-fated Russian convey that was attacked by enemy submarines. His ship was sunk and the members of the ships crew had eight minutes to abandon without extra clothing or food. It was Sept. 26, three days later, Spraggins said, before they were picked up.

Spraggins was recently given publicity as being a guest of the Duchess of Tallyrand at her Lyndhurst Club in New York.

Class B title decided here Friday night

The Mustangs will meet the Browning Indians this Friday, Nov. 13, at 8 o'clock on the local field to determine the North Montana District B champions.

Hould, 98, right guard; L. Lefdahl, 85, left tackle; G. Phillips, 91, end and L. Klimoer, 84, tackle.

Old-time Dodson resident dies at home Monday

The funeral of Sam Funell, 60, was held this afternoon in Dodson. Funell died at his home Monday.

He was born in Sweden, April 25, 1882, and came to the United States when he was seven years old He has lived in the Dodson community for 27 years. In 1918, he married Mrs. Toomey in Malta.

November 16, 1967

Dress shop opening set

The opening of a new business, Barbara's Dress Shop, is tentatively set for next Monday, according to Vernon Robinson, manager. The new shop will be located just north of the Sugar Shack on First Avenue East.

A complete line of ladies ready-to-wear will be handled at the shop including lingerie, purses, gloves, coats, dresses, suits, skirts, blouses and sweaters. There will be two dressing rooms in the store.

TV program wants picture of Landusky

The Malta Chamber of Commerce has received a letter forwarded from the Helena Chamber from the producers of the "Death Valley Days" television series. In the letter they state that they are preparing an episode dealing with an event in the life of mountain man Pike Landusky. They are seeking a photograph of the town as it looks today.

All-day kindergarten gets Malta board ok

Beginning next fall, the Malta School District will begin offering all-day kindergarten classes. Board members voted unanimously at their meeting last week to begin offering all-day sessions in 2008-09.
