One Nation, Under God

I dream of gyros

I could probably talk about food about four hours a day.

I definitely have my favorite local spots in town. When I call any where in town to order lunch or dinner, I have found that many who answer know my voice. I guess for a few restaurants in Malta, I have become a regular.

Believe it or not it reminds me of my hometown in the suburbs of Chicago.

It is no secret that the land of Chicago is a mecca for food, so it only makes sense that I tell you about one of my favorite spots, a place called Prenos.

Though this place isn’t really a Greek restaurant, Prenos makes a gyro that is out of this world.

There were times that restaurant has kept me alive. Before I flew here around six years ago, I ate a gyro seven times in the last week of living in my hometown. If you knew how much pita, lamb, onions, tomato and tzatziki sauce was on a Prenos gyro, you would understand how I, once a three-pound premature baby, weighs close to 300 pounds.

Going on vacations to my hometown, there are plenty of places we hit up, Giordano’s Pizzeria, Portillo’s, Lou Malnati’s, and other restaurants that aren’t exclusive to the area, but Preno’s has a special place in my heart.

I remember proudly bringing my wife in to see the place and her reaction to the amount of toppings on their chicken gyro. Though she says she loved it, she tends to get the Chicago-style hot dog, which is a tradition that I am glad to have brought into her world.

The truth is like many restaurant in Chicago, Preno’s menu has a lot going on, including burgers, sandwiches, Italian beef, and other things. Yes, they have salads but salad was not something I considered a meal until I moved here. My heart thanks you, Phillips County.

Though I do miss Chicago’s bustling array of options, I have to say that I am impressed by the beef I have eaten here. I have ordered many burgers around town, have grilled many steaks and last weekend I smoked a an extremely tasty brisket gifted to my family.

Last weekend’s brisket wasn’t the first time that we had been blessed with awesome Montana beef. That reminds me, since we are due to have our second kid this weekend, I better start thinking about buying beeves.
