MDT to Resume on Malta-South

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Wickens Construction Inc. will resume operations on the Malta—South project in the coming weeks, weather permitting.

Crews will resume work in April to realign and reconstruct US Highway 191 (US 191), flattening steep roadway grades and sharp curves and enhancing safety features. In addition, the project will install snow ditches to mitigate drifting snow issues and new pedestrian facilities at 9th Street West. MDT anticipates that the project will be complete by this fall.

Last year, crews completed work on the Alkali Creek Bridge and the irrigation ditch bridge near the edge of town. In addition, alignment work and culvert installation began on US 191, starting approximately 9 miles outside of Malta.

Crews will begin this year’s work with pavement grinding and pipe installation on US 191 adjacent to Marian Hills Golf Course, and continuing realignment activities working south. Work will occur Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but may change as construction progresses.

“We want to advise community members and travelers to expect short delays, flaggers, traffic signals, pilot cars controlling the movement of traffic, single-lane restrictions, and reduced speed limits,” said Ryan Durbin, President of Wickens Construction. “Our goal is to maintain traffic flow while ensuring the safety of both our crews and the public. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to complete this project.”

The traveling public is strongly encouraged to watch for the “cone zone” and for workers on the highway. These workers spend their days working a short distance from fast-moving vehicles, and while they make every effort to work safely, they count on you to pay attention, slow down, and be careful as you pass through a work zone.
