Class C Track at Cal Wearley

All three Phillips County Class C schools were able to get points on the board at the Cal Wearley Memorial Meet held by North Star in Havre last Wednesday, April 10.

The Whitewater Lady Penguins placed the highest amongst Phillips County Teams, tying for second place with Chinook with 44 points. Saco wasn't too far behind with 38 points, which earned the team a sixth place finish. Havre won the meet with 121 points.

Saco was sixth in the men's meet with 24 points. Dodson was twenty-first with two points.

The Panthers also went to Scobey's Northeast Invitational on Saturday, April 13, and both teams scored points. The Saco Lady Panthers were fourth with 51 points, falling in-between Plentywood who took third place with 52 points and Westby-Grenora who was fifth with 50. The Panther boys were eleventh with six points.

DODSON

Dodson was led by sophomore Donovan Posey in their outing at the Cal Wearley Invitational. Posey scored the team's only points by placing fifth in the 1600 with a time of 5:18.42.

Junior Stiffarm, a junior, was close to placing in the high jump event by clearing a personal best of 5-8.

Dodson senior Sebastian Best took ninth in triple jump with a season's best of 35-9.25. The PCN caught up with the senior after his triple jump.

"The weather is not the best but we are doing what we can," Best said. "It's a beautiful day but the wind is just kicking everyone's butt today."

He was asked about how he thought he did in the triple jump.

"There is definitely a lot to improve," Best said. "I know that I can be one of the best jumpers in the state, but I have to work on it. It's why we spend all day in the weight room. We are just trying to be the best that we can."

Best also competed in long jump and hit a mark at 17-3.50. He also ran with Mason LoneBear, Stiffarm, and Posey in the short relay. He was asked which event was his favorite.

"I love all of my events," Best said. "It's hard to pick one."

Best's love and enthusiasm for the sport of track and field seemed apparent given his answer, so he was asked what he enjoyed so much about the sport.

"Being around so many good people," Best said. "People who are going to compete with you but also aren't going to talk smack to you all of the time."

The Coyotes also participated in the Fergus Invite on Thursday, April 4.

At the Cal Wearley, sophomore Lance KillEagle was tenth in the 3200 with a PR of 12:57.1. He was also eleventh in the 1600 with a PR of 5:43.20 and fifteenth in the 800 with a PR of 2:28.44.

Dodson's short relay consisting of Mason LoneBear, Stiffarm, Best, and Posey was thirteenth with a time of 51.38.

At the Cal Wearley, freshman Gunnar Cilz had a personal best of 16-8 in long jump and 13.68 in the 100.

In Fergus, the Lady Coyotes were led by freshman Baylee Johnson who had a PR of 16:25.28 in the 3200. Johnson also set a new PR in the 800 of 3:27.18.

Amara Cochran was eleventh in discus with a personal best of 84-00 and twelfth in shot put with a new best of 27-8. At the Cal Wearley, Cochran was tenth in shot put with a throw of 27-5 and fourteenth in discus with a throw of 77-5.

The team's short relay consisting of Bentlie Ereaux, Johnson, Precious Stiffarm, and Kashton Siers were seventeenth with a time of 1:04.11 at the Fergus Invite.

Siers was seventeenth in the 300 hurdles at the Fergus meet with a PR of 1:08.22.

SACO

At the Cal Wearley Memorial, Saco junior Blaine Downing led the Panther boys with a first place finish in pole vault. Downing cleared 12-6, but won the event after clearing 10-6. Three tied for second place after clearing 10-0.

"I was really hoping to get 14-6 (his current PR is 14-1) today but this tail–wind was messing with me," Downing said.

Downing was also second in the 100 with a PR of 11.55 and third in the 400 with a time of 54.44.

Downing was asked about his team and what it is like to compete with the group that he practices with everyday.

"It's a pretty good environment to be around," Downing said. "Everybody is winning and competing. We are all cheering each other on. It helps a lot when I see them winning their events and then I see them cheering for me. I really appreciate that."

Freshman Laytin Erickson just missed placing in two events. He was seventh in pole vault after clearing 9-00 and eighth in triple jump with a personal best of 36-01.

Jacob Brown was eleventh in triple jump with a PR of 35-3.75. Brown had a personal best of 119-00 in javelin.

Carter Pippin set new bests of 55-6 in discus and 55-3 in javelin.

The Lady Panthers were led by senior Teagan Erickson who won javelin with a throw of 114-0. She also won triple jump with a mark at 33-6.50.

Josie Brown was second in the 100 with a time of 12.80 seconds. Emerson Downing was third in the junior varsity 400 with a time of 1:11.65. E. Downing was also fourth in the varsity pole vault by clearing 7-00 and sixth in the varsity 300 hurdles with a time of 52.43.

Saco's short relay team was third with a time 54.40. The group consisted of E. Downing, Ireland Mears, T. Erickson, and Brown.

WHITEWATER

The Lady Penguins were led by junior Shelbi LaBrie who won the 3200 with a time of 12:24.20. LaBrie was second in the 800 with a time of 2:38.69.

The long relay consisting of Kennedy Simonson, Kendall Scheffelmear, LaBrie, and Gracie Wasson was second with a time of 4:44.31.

Wasson, an eighth-grader, was fourth in pole vault after clearing 7-00.

Scheffelmear, a senior, was fourth in triple jump with a mark left at 32-11. She was also fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.98 and fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.20.

Sophomore Sommer Green was eighth in shot put with a personal best of 28-8.50. She was also twelfth in discus with a PR of 79-00.

Ava Hanley was ninth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.90 and fourteenth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 1:00.34.

The Penguin boys were led by Korbyn Skubinna who was fourteenth in pole vault after clearing 8-00.

Tyler Scheffelmear was sixteenth in the 400 with a personal best of 59.90.
