It's Wednesday morning in Whitewater and the smell of sausage cooking floats through the halls of the school. Though no students have arrived on campus yet, Whitewater School head cook Carol Simanton, in her 20th year at the school; has most of the day's breakfast cooked and is putting the final touches on a huge pan full of scrambled eggs and the aforementioned sausage. Bowls of fresh fruit are laid out on a counter and dispensers of cold cereal are are all ready for all who might enjoy a...

"I had no idea, and I don't know the process or who nominated me," Bloomer admits. "But it is a great honor." The focus of the class, which is targeted for juniors but can be taken by all upperclassmen, assist students to stay in school, graduate and successfully transition from school into employment, post-secondary education, apprenticeship, or the military. Mark Hebert, Editor|Jan 20, 2016

The frigid temperatures that hit Phillips County last weekend couldn’t have come at a better time …at least for those folks who are fans of ice skating. At last Tuesday’s Malta City Council meeting, Public Works Director Jim Truelove let the council members know that he had recently started filling one of Malta’s two ice rinks (this one located at 7th Street East and 6th Ave East, Behind the Prellwitz property.) Malta Mayor Shyla Jones said she had received several requests for the rink to be filled with water and the City obliged. (Later in th...

  • The plastic bag conspiracy

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jan 20, 2016

Anyone who has visited Livingston in the middle of winter has no doubt seen and heard the plastic grocery bags hung up on the branches of trees in town where they pop and snap in the wind. It’s an unsightly winter phenomenon, the result of uncorralled trash and unrelenting winds. The problem disappears from sight in the spring when the trees leaf out and the foliage hides the remains of the plastic bags. I never considered it anything more than a seasonal reminder not to litter, but now I find i...

  • Best week ever? Not so much

    Brandon Nicholson, Columnist|Jan 20, 2016

Well, it is official. My luck has run out… I am not a billionaire. The major $1.5 billion Powerball was won this last week. Unfortunately, the tickets I purchased were duds. You’re four times more likely to get struck by lightning than winning the lottery. Thankfully I dodged a bullet on the lightning too. My luck got even worse Sunday when Peyton Manning and the Denver defense knocked my Cinderella-Steelers out of the postseason. I cannot catch a break; hopefully things will be different this week. I have a very exciting NBA matchup to loo...

  • Dark and full-bodied, like me.

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jan 20, 2016

I wasn’t always a coffee snob. I have never been one of those types to confuse a barista with insane 20 step instructions to make a perfect cup of Joe, yet I am still pretty picky about my coffee. I like my coffee black and strong. If it’s too weak, that’s a problem. Even as a kid at church services, I liked coffee. But I liked it with creamer. I liked it not only because I thought it perked me up for the three hour event but because I genuinely loved the taste. Then I went to college. In those...
