  • I am quite fond of rest areas

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jan 21, 2015

I’m quite fond of rest areas. I’ve slept in them, used the facilities there, and pulled in to walk the dogs. And over the years I’ve seen them change. It used to be that rest areas were located on remote stretches of highway far from towns. A long time ago that was the point -- to provide a place to take a break out in the boondocks. Remote rest areas, however, deemed too dangerous, and too difficult to maintain, are vanishing. Many have been replaced with in-town rest areas such as the one i...

  • Corporatism is a form of communism

    Jan 21, 2015

Majority Rules: The ‘Ballot Initiative’ like ‘Eminent Domain’ What a concept! A chance for the majority (democracy) to “expletive” (edit) the minority. This shows that all the talk about compromise, consensus, majority, the collective, think group, think team, and ‘for the good of us all’ is B.S. The Constitution is here to protect the individual. The Constitution Rule is never collaboration, give and take, is Paristroika and Glasnoist. Progressive can be regressive. The majority can and is usually victimized by the media. Remember the 7-...

  • Affirmative Action for the Oscars?

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jan 21, 2015

The announcement of the nominees for the 87th Academy Awards has caused a bit of brouhaha in both cinematic and social circles around the country. The movie has only been out for a few weeks and though the movie did well at the box office this week – I w...

  • Germaphobe

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jan 21, 2015

Apparently the month of January is National Bath Safety Month. Bath safety encompasses many things including making sure your tub is slip proof, making sure you keep a close eye on your children in the tub to prevent drowning and even making sure the water temperature isn’t too hot. When I think about bath safety, it takes me back to my disdain for communal showers. I was the type that always wore flip-flops in the dorms. I would sanitize everything in the bathroom before I used it. I don’t car...
