  • County Spelling Bee Queen Crowned

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Feb 14, 2018

It started with "thorn" and ended with "paralysis." When it was all said and done, 102 words were spelled correctly on the afternoon (23 in the incorrect pile) and of those, 14 were perfectly pronounced by Whitewater School's Hannah Hanley who took home the first place trophy at the Phillips County Spelling Bee last Tuesday, a year after taking second place at the annual event. A total of 25 contestants from Dodson, Malta, Whitewater and Saco Elementary and Middle Schools descended on the Malta...

  • Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day Recap

    Marko Manoukian, P.C. Extension Agent|Feb 14, 2018

Over 30 producers attended the annual Jim Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day on January 24, 2018. The first presentation was by Dr. Jeffery Hall, Professor at Utah State University Common. Dr. Hall is very familiar with the troubles in balancing mineral and vitamin requirement for cattle in areas with poor water quality. Water levels with sulfates as low as 500 parts per million (ppm) can cause copper (Cu) deficiencies in cattle. These complications can lead to polio or even death from secondary...

  • A cure for those old Winter Blues

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Feb 14, 2018

I’m trying to embrace winter. Relish it. Greet each frosty morning with a smile. It’s difficult. At 20 below I don’t even want to go outside, let alone frolic in the snow. I went ice fishing last week with a friend who truly enjoys this time of year. He showed up at the cabin with two snow machines, a power auger, and enough minnows and smelt to open a bait shop. A Minnesota native of Scandinavian descent, Mike is hard-wired for the cold. He doesn’t seem to notice when the mercury takes a dive....

  • Not bad at all PCH

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Feb 14, 2018

My wife and I were on our way to Glasgow to have a look at our unborn child and somehow emergency room situations came up. We were out of town this past fall and a medical emergency came up where a family member had to be rushed to the hospital. Susan and I stayed behind with the family’s children and we noticed that it took the healthcare provider a while to get to the patient. I thought back to times that I had to go to the emergency room in my hometown, a town of about 70,000, and I r...

  • Attention: Town of Dodson Water Users

    Terri Cole, Dodson Mayor|Feb 14, 2018

Dear Dodson residents, As most of you are aware, we recently experienced our fifth water break since late September of 2017. This has come at an incredible expense to our town budget; of approximately $20,000. We currently have several people in serious arrears with their water accounts and we MUST get these current +, in order to afford any more problems. As with other utilities that you rely on, you must pay your bill. We certainly understand that it is a hardship, but going without water at all will be much harder. Please get your water...
