  • Business owners ask Malta City Council about lingering stench around downtown

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 18, 2015

During the new business portion of last Tuesday night's Malta City Council Meeting, two business owners located in the city's downtown wanted to talk about the phantom smell that continues to plague downtown businesses. In April of last year the Malta Public Works team ignited smoke bombs and dropped them into downtown sewers and found some leaks in Malta business. The smoke bombs were the latest attempt to figure out how the foul order was making its way into the downtown businesses for at...

The chili was hot, the beverages cold and people's spirits were lively at the 12th VWF/American Legion Auxiliary Chili Cookoff in Malta on Sunday night. About 40 hungry souls showed up to taste five different team's chili and hors d'oeuvres while spying the team's table decorations during the function. • Refreshing to hear a voice of reason

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Feb 18, 2015

The end must be near. Whitey’s becoming a voice of reason. With Republican lawmakers in Helena advocating the transfer of federal lands to state control, Rep. Kerry White (R-Bozeman) called the plan “unrealistic.” He told the Billings Gazette the transfer would be too technically complex. An incumbent, who has served in the Legislature since 2012, White has been a vocal opponent of the Endangered Species Act and advocated for increased motorized access on national forest land He sits on the E...

  • $100,000 Hi-Line Retirement donation from Flansaas Estate

    Feb 18, 2015

Dear Editor, In last week’s Phillips County News there was an article praising Malta Lutheran Church for donating $100,000 to the Hi-Line Retirement Center. Some of you may be wondering where they got the money. It was memorial funds received from the Albert Flansaas estate. It is sad that the Malta Church Council failed to acknowledge that. Albert was a member of the Loring Lutheran Church. The nursing home and hospital are very much needed in Phillips County and needs everyone’s support. John Flansaas Malta...

  • Donating blood needed more than ever

    Feb 18, 2015

BLOOD: More important than ever with the raging snowstorms in the East and the nation being swamped with the flu bug. The number one reason donors state they wish to give blood is to help others; number one reason potential donors don’t wish to give blood is they ‘don’t like needles’. Really? Have you had your flu shot? Pneumonia shot? They are administered by needles. No matter, American Red Cross appreciates everyone who tries and more so, every successful donor. You have an average of 10 pints of blood in your system, and only donate one pin...

  • So many events, so little time

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 18, 2015

The amount of things going on in any given week in Phillips County Never ceases to amaze me. I hate to always dump on the former county I lived in, but you would be hard-pressed to find any events to attend in Mineral County. In fact, it in Mineral, it would take an entire year to match the events in one month inside Phillips County. As a “newsman” having so many things going on in a given week it is both a blessing and a curse. There is always something to cover, but with so many things going on, it also means that some events don’t get cover...

  • I love chili!

    Sophia Hebert, PCN Correspondent|Feb 18, 2015

When I was little my dad made me canned chili for lunch sometimes and since then, chili has always been my favorite meal. I could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner, if Dad would let me. I like it with crackers, cheese, onions and sour cream or, when my dad makes it for me, over white rice (a recipe he learned when he lived in Hawaii.) When I got a little older, I learned that Walt Disney, one of my favorite Americans, also had a love for chili, and like me, would sometimes eat it for breakfast. I guess great minds think a like. When Walt ha...
