  • Barnard pens fourth children's book

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 25, 2015

Colleen Barnard, local author of children's books, held a book signing at the Phillips County Library in Malta on Saturday afternoon to promote her latest tale, Jerry the Spunky Little Loveable Longhorn Steer Calf. Jerry is the story that looks to teach an important lesson to children about caring for all of God's animals, and does so in a playful and caring way. At the event on Saturday in Malta, Barnard's friend Cecilia Wilke made a slew of treats – including chocolate covered strawberries a...

  • Nearly 90 students show up for Malta Walleye Unlimited Ice Fishing Day despite frigid temps

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 25, 2015

Not high-winds nor below zero temperatures dissuaded the nearly 90 students who joined the Malta Walleyes Unlimited during their annual ice fishing day at Nelson Reservoir early this month. "And each school brought three or four chaperones, there was a handful of Fish, Wildlife and Parks folks and about a dozen Walleye members out there that day," said Malta Walleye Don Voegel. "It was a really good turnout." A total of 31 students from Malta, 33 students from Hays, and 10 students each from...

  • I could get by with fewer firearms, but I am always looking for more

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Feb 25, 2015

The headline caught my eye: “14 guns seized from murder suspect’s home.” The story was about the weapons, and cache of ammunition found in the home of a man charged with killing three young Muslims in North Carolina recently. I won’t say how many weapons I own, but the number is close to that. I’m hoping that’s the only similarity we share. I’d hate to hear the guy is also a 62-year-old Cubs fan who likes to hunt and fish and listen to Tom Petty. It makes sense to report on the number of fir...

Hello to the hi-line from your Capitol in Helena Montana. The 64th Montana Legislature is at the half way point. The easy work has been done and the hard decisions are before us. The House and Senate leadership are working together and await the Executive branch to join in. There any many pieces to the puzzle, we would like them all to fit, but reality is, they will not. We have proposed, through a series of health-care bills, that will take care of the needy by “getting the right services to the right people”. We are trying to fill the pov...

  • Never prank a guy who knows Photoshop

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 25, 2015

Call me "gullible" or call me "the new guy." Call me "exhausted" or call me "feeble." All four names where applicable last week when I got pranked and ran a photo caption with the wrongs names of two Phillips County residents underneath a picture on the front page. Fool me once, shame on me...and prepare for payback. I attended the VFW/ American Legion Chili Cookoff two weeks ago and met a bunch of new people. I chatted them up, wrote their names down and snapped some pictures. Three of these people where dressed-up in Mexican garb for the...

  • Stay classy Malta

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Feb 25, 2015

I have to admit the teams around the Phillips County area have been impressive as of late. Between the M-ettes and Lady Panthers taking first in their conference to the Mustangs taking second and the Panthers and Lady Coyotes earning tough wins to make it to the next level, I'm proud of our teams. I would also like to say how proud of our local fan base I am. I know some of our fans vent in different tasteless ways, but some of the other fan bases have shown much less class. As you go to these...
