She said her mother, Betty, was a former President of the CattleWomen and that she has grown up with Ag Day being part of every spring's schedule over the years. "Overall the concept is still very much the...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 25, 2015

Malta Cub Scout Pack 432 met at their lodge in Trafton Park recently and the 20 members raced their Pinewood Derby Cars against each other to see who had the right stuff. Though the racing of the cars is fun – as many of the Scouts eluded to during the event – many said that building their cars with their fathers was even grander. “I liked watching my dad spray paint ours,” said Dylan Wright. “Then we put some black dust on it and some weights on it to make it faster.” Wright said that it was fun to see how everyone decorated their car – he and...

  • Is Malta's "phantom smell" my fault?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 25, 2015

Something stinks and I fear it may be me. Folks in Malta have been complaining for some time now about a bad odor that’s plaguing the downtown business district. Smoke bombs have been set off in the sewers to try and locate the source of the stink, but so far no culprit has been identified. Maybe it’s time to get rid of the sauerkraut. In my basement sits a large ceramic crock half-filled with fermenting cabbage. It’s been there for a couple of years. At the time my wife and I filled the crock...

  • Why did Jesus fold the napkin?

    Mar 25, 2015

Greetings Phillips County Why did Jesus fold the napkin? Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? The Gospel of John tells us {John 20:7} that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed separate from the grave clothes. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and fo...

So, 11-brave high school students from Mrs. Pankratz’s creative writing class made their trip to the offices of the PCN last Friday, and boy, were they ever captivated! (And by “captivated” I mean we didn’t bore them to tears or put them to sleep.) The event started with introductions of the PCN staff and from there we talked about writing a news story lead, the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where and why...and sometimes, who cares?) as well as the always important Ctl+S feature that saves any document one might be working on in any computer...

  • I win

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Mar 25, 2015

I never win anything. Except for in Madden Football, a game which I have played for over a dozen years. 50-50 raffles? Forget about it. Every time I hear a number called, I hope that whoever is called isn’t there so they can do a recall. Am I a poor sport? Probably. In fact, yes I am a sore loser. But that’s only because everyone wants to win. Last Friday was a weird day. Little did I know that it was a day of victory. I gallivanted to the Firehouse with Mark for a firehouse burger prepared by...
