  • Malta Walleyes draws near 400 despite gloomy weather

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 1, 2015

Not rain or wild, whipping winds could keep a large crowd from showing up to the 26th Annual Walleyes Unlimited Banquet on Saturday night in Malta as nearly 400 people piled into the Malta City Hall for food, fun and fundraising. Don Voegel, who recently stepped down as club president after serving four years in the position, was honored on the night and given a painting entitled Moonlight over Walleyes, a life preserver (in case he should deposit his truck in a lake again) as well as a plaque from the Walleyes. “This plaque represents every of...

  • Fishless in a pretty place

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Apr 1, 2015

At least I didn’t get skunked. For three weeks last month I enjoyed the balmy warmth of the Bahamas, drove on the wrong side of the road, ate a lot of conch, and cast a lot of flies. I’d never been fishless in prettier places. In my defense, the trip wasn’t specifically designed for fishing. It was a family vacation, but I just happened to pack along an eight-weight rod and a box of saltwater flies. It would give me something to do when I wasn’t being dad or grandpa. And what a grand place i...

  • Rep. Mike Lang Montana Legislature Update

    Rep. Mike Lang|Apr 1, 2015

Go to this site. http://www.blm.gov/mt/st/en/info/newsroom/2015/march/blm_requests_input.html We have many great range managers in Phillips County, who have many years of experience that should give their opinion on this matter. Seasonal range management by rotational grazing has protected the resource we now have on BLM lands. This has been implemented and accepted by allotted producers by cross fencing and pasture rotation. I question whether the request before the BLM is good for our range resource. Representative Mike L Lang Montana HD 33...

  • PCN to be designed in Monkey's Elbow, AZ?

    Mark Hebert, Sports Editor|Apr 1, 2015

A recent column in the Montana Journalism Review by Allison Franz – Losing Home Advantage, http://mjr.jour.umt.edu/losing-home-advantage/ -- told the story of how the pages of the Great Falls Tribune are laid out by designers in Arizona (that has been the case since 2012) and how in 2015, “at least four of Montana’s seven major newspapers will be paginated by designers thousands of miles of away.” Franz reported that Lee Enterprises (owners of such daily fish wraps as the Montana Standard, Helena Independent Record and Missoulian) will move to...

  • Community Theater revived in Malta

    Kathy Bagley, PCN Correspondent|Apr 1, 2015

Community Theater has been around for a very long time! The Greeks and Romans had their own theaters which were brought by them to the British Isles and throughout Europe. Eastern Europe and the Asian Continent also had their form of performance acting and village community theater for entertainment. Evolving from legend-telling around the campfires of our ancestors into dramatic productions involving costumes and turning into a profession, acting is as old as the ages. What compels us to want to act? My theory, when you don’t have anything t...

  • Light snow pack underscores importance of stored water

    Marko Manoukian|Apr 1, 2015

The most glaring number that the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) provided at the March 24 St. Mary Rehabilitation Working Group (SMRWG) meeting in Havre was not the $40 million construction cost for a new diversion structure. It was the fact that the current snow pack in the St. Mary/Milk River system was only at 65%. This highlights the importance of a reservoir and conveyance system. Reservoirs were able to capture fall storm events and 2015 early spring runoff. This gives the irrigation project...
