  • Skatepark for Malta

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 20, 2016

Like a runaway skateboarder flying down Ruby Ave, the news of Malta's planned skatepark has been fast and furious since going before the Malta City Council last Tuesday. At that meeting, Ashley Stuart, Travis Rhoads, Shane Carnahan and Laura Pankratz – all from different organizations, but all with the same thing on their minds – pled their case to the council members on the virtues of a skatepark. The council heard that Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament would be donating $50,000, free of cha...

  • Mammoth Malta City Council Meeting

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 20, 2016

The Malta City Council Meeting last Tuesday night started a half-hour early, 4:30 p.m., to make room for a presentation on a recent housing study conducted by KLJ, an engineering and surveying firm out of Billings. Four hours and one minute later, the council voted – 4-0 in favor –to adjourn the meeting. Pinched in between those 241 minutes were motions passed, skate parks discussed, projects approved and more than a few yawns. The first business of the night was KLJ who has spent the last seven months creating a housing study for several eas...

  • Help sought in breaking world record

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 20, 2016

Being part of a world record to hopefully be recognized by Guinness could be a few pen strokes away if the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have their way. DAR is currently trying to collect 10,000 letters to go to active duty service members and these are needed in one month time in order to set the Guinness World Record title. Malta’s Barb Wiebe is Vice Regent of DAR’s North Eastern Region. She has been a part of DAR for 10 years – and once held the North Eastern Region’s Presidency – following in several of her family's footsteps...

  • Pike gets my lure, and then my finger

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Apr 20, 2016

You’d think I’d have it figured out by now. After all, I’ve been catching northern pike for much of my life. But I’ve only just begun fishing for those toothy critters again this spring and my fingers are already full of holes. There’s nothing subtle about fishing for northerns. Save your light lines and delicate presentations for trout. Northern pike like big baits that hit the water with a splash. They actually eat ducks. I thought that was an old wives tale until I found a half-grow...

  • Trying to remain positive about the skatepark

    Apr 20, 2016

Dear Editor, Foremost, we are not opposed to the skate park; it’s a wonderful gift and opportunity. We are concerned that it changes the traditional use and nature the park in our neighborhood. Since we moved to the Hillcrest Subdivision, the west grass area has been utilized as a play area for neighborhood kids for pickup ball games (kickball, baseball, football) and path to the walk bridge. We’ve researched skate parks online and they can be a tremendous asset but most have had opportunity of long range planning and community inv...

  • 'You gave what winning takes: hunnud pussent'

    Jimmy Reed, Columnist|Apr 20, 2016

In reading and writing, I found rhyme and reason, but not in arithmetic. As best he could, my boyhood best friend and mentor Jaybird explained it. Although illiterate, he had been taught by life’s most demanding teacher: experience. His wisdom filled many gaps in my education. Take percentages, for example. The teacher’s explanation went over my head, but Jaybird’s made sense: “Let's say you’ve got $100, and I konk you on the head with a stick, and take all yo’ money. I robbed you — hunnud pussent. But, if I take $50, I robbed you fifty pus...

  • I'm with Dangerfield

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Apr 20, 2016

I don’t understand why nearly every movie or popular song has to either be pro-fane, vulgar, sacrilegious or all of the above. It seems that nothing is sacred anymore. The promiscuous world we live in has even reached the youth to the extent that it is “normal” for kids to lose their vir-ginity at preteen ages. I saw an alarming commercial the other day saying that one in four teens have std’s. Yikes. I know I risk being called “judgmental,” by even talking about this topic but hon-estly i...
