  • Revved up at the Car Show

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 8, 2016

Of the 94 vehicles entered in Saturday’s 14th Annual First State Bank Car Show, a few cars had more sentimental value than others did and at least one made a return trip to Malta after being sold here in 1955. As long time Malta resident Ken Ulrich and former Malta resident Jon Bourassa strolled down the rows of vehicles at the car show, Bourassa stopped and told the story of how his blue and white 1955 Bel Air two-door sedan had a history with the town and how he came to own it after many years...

On Wednesday, June 15, PTA is asking the public to come down to the Stockman Terrace in Malta from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to help celebrate their 10th birthday. • Metal Steel rocks the Pavilion

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 8, 2016

That wasn't thunder you heard late on Saturday night, but rather the booming bass guitar and double bass drum that shook the bleachers at the Milk River Pavilion when Metal Steel took the stage and rocked into the wee hours of the morning. Putting an exclamation point on a busy Saturday in Malta, Metal Steel – which boasts being the 'Ultimate Metal Tribute Band' – took the stage around 9:30 and played for the next three hours. If there is a Heavy Metal song you liked in the 80's, chances are...

  • The company of neither

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jun 8, 2016

Folks frequently say they prefer the company of dogs to people. I don’t see much difference. I get annoyed at both. It’s not even true that dogs are always glad to see you. Most of the time, sure, but catch Fido with his head buried in the garbage can and it’s a sure bet he’s wishing you were somewhere else. Same thing when you walk in on him lifting his leg on the recliner. That’s not a look of “I’m happy to see you” on his face. Some dogs like some people, don’t know when to shut up. The diff...

  • The disconnect between science and reality

    Ron Stoneberg|Jun 8, 2016

I recently had the privilege of visiting with a couple of ranchers from near the Grasslands National Park (NP) in Saskatchewan, Canada. I heard the amazing story that when cattle were removed from the park, the resident wildlife also left. The decline in grassland dependent birds was very noticeable. In particular, one rancher observed the sage grouse left when the cattle were removed. This rancher was subsequently contracted by the park to reintroduce his cattle to these over rested pastures. Amazingly, the sage grouse returned to the area...

  • Things to think about this Flag Day

    Jun 8, 2016

On Flag Day, June 14, we commemorate the adoption of the American flag. For more than 200 years, Old Glory has served as a symbol of our nation’s freedom and as a source of pride for our citizens. In patriotic parades and musical salutes, we support our local military units and recognize the significance of the stars and stripes. Flag Day is also a time to honor our nation’s veterans who have served to protect the flag and the ideals it represents. With each ceremonial fold of the flag, we recognize the prin-ciples on which our country was fou...

  • Missing the school year already

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 8, 2016

I used to look forward to summer break as a kid. It was a time that dad used to pull out the grill, we would knock the dust off of our bicycles, go to the pool and hang out with friends outside of the classroom setting. So I can see why it’s fun for kids. But on the other end of the spectrum, I am not as geeked up about this joyous season. I’ve walked the hallways of the elementary, junior high and high school building this past week and it looked like the rapture happened. As far as sports go,...

  • Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus in Phillips County

    Marko Manoukian, P.C. Extension Agent|Jun 8, 2016

Several samples of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) have been found in Phillips County. The virus has been found mostly in winter wheat and some barley. The virus is spread by the wheat curl might. The might survives on green material over the winter such as hail damaged fields and unkept summer follow. Symptoms of WSMV include yellowing of the leaf in a streak or stripe pattern. Severely affected plants appear yellow and become confused with nutrient deficiency. Symptoms may appear on the edge...

  • Counseling Corner for the week of June 8, 2016

    American Counseling Association|Jun 8, 2016

eam Up For Success In Creating A Healthier Life Some people have strong opinions about everything and no hesitation in sharing them, even when those opinions aren’t wanted. While that’s certainly not a formula for social success, many of us face a problem that’s quite the opposite – being hesitant to speak our mind and voice our opinions, even when invited to and when doing so could offer some real help. There may be many reasons why we’re reluctant to speak up. We may doubt the value of what we have to offer, or fear our views will be critic...

We also had a fair bit of sun! The beautiful brown trashers are back in our yard, eating insects. Also the fly catchers are building their nest on the deck again. I love seeing the wild flax in bloom on the way to Malta! I made the trip across the big coulee over to Turner yesterday. Visited at the cemetery...
