26 was the year Leonardo DiCaprio was the "king of the world" aboard the deck of the Titanic, Bill Clinton was inaugurated for a second term and the Spice Girls wanted to know "what you want, what you really, really want." 1997 was also that year 56 seniors at Malta High School turned their graduation tassels to the left and put high school in their rearview mirrors. A lot can happen in 20 years and this Saturday, June 24, some of those former students are meeting at the Mint Bar to celebrate...

At the May 23 Malta City Council Meeting, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones was informed by two engineers from TD&H-the firm charged with the oversight of the current water project being conducted by Helena Sand and Gravel (HS&G)- that the HS&G subcontractor laying asphalt for the job 4,000...

  • Sen. Mike Lang recounts 65th Montana legislature

Sen. Mike Lang, MT SD 17|Jun 21, 2017

The 65th Montana legislature ended in late April by balancing a $10.3 billion-dollar- budget for the biennium of 2018 and 2019. My first session was in 2013 and we had about $550 million of general fund cash on hand. However, because spending was not curtailed and the revenue projections did not materialize, at the end of May 2017 only $76M remains in the general fund cash balance. A year ago at this time we had a balance of $343M. The budget is based on revenue and expenditure estimations. If estimations deviate then you are not balanced....

  • Fishing still figures

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jun 21, 2017

Among the things my father taught me fly fishing still figures prominently. I don’t know where he picked it up. Fly fishing certainly wasn’t common in the rural Illinois of his youth, but it be-came Dad’s favorite way to fish. He showed me how to cast foam rubber spiders for bass and bluegill when I was a kid and I’ve fished with a fly rod ever since. Dad was a salesman with a route across southern In-diana and he always kept a rod in the trunk of his car, regularly stopping on his lunch b...

  • The Drive of Shame

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 21, 2017

Get your mind out of the gutter. It wasn’t that kind of drive. I blew a tire for the first time. I admit I should’ve seen it coming, knowing that my tires had struggled to hold air in the winter months. During spring my tires performed a lot better but on a weekly trip to pick up the papers in Havre, I passed a vehicle going a somewhat reasonable speed when I knew something wasn’t quite right. The blowout wasn’t as dramatic as I thought one may be. I made it safely to the shoulder but the roa...

Our deepest sympathies and prayers to the Hill family of Whitewater on the loss of family during their recent tragedy. Get well wishes to Ree Simonson and whoever is sick. There was a misprint in last week’s paper. Both my brother and father’s names were “Harry” (not Harvey.) Many from this area went to the Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood concerts in Billings …wish I had gone. The Wilcotts built a house in Malta: what carpenters! There is a housing shortage in Whitewater; a real need for house...

Dr. G. W. Clay was in charge. ♦ ♦ ♦ The air was full of things martial. Dr...

Summer has arrived in Phillips County. The PC Museum has had visitors from 24 states and several countries. In 1959 the town of Malta had a set of unique visitors. Let’s go back to August of 1959. Forty gypsies arrived in eight trailers. If you have seen or know of any active dens in northern Blaine, Phillips,...
