  • Gaylord LaFond has seen it all in his 98 years

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 23, 2014

Gaylord LaFond can say something that many residents of Phillips County cannot. He is a Malta native born and raised and he has been around for 98 years, since May 14, 1916. When asked if LaFond was a candidate for the PCN's Senior Spotlight, we at the news office wanted to hear anything LaFond felt like telling. For one thing LaFond has not only seen Malta built building by building, as it turns out, LaFond probably helped produce many of the sidewalks we walk on and buildings you step into on... Full story

July 28, 2004 10-years ago Headline: New Malta Superintendent is settling in Almost one month into his new job as superintendent of the Malta School District, Kris Kuehn is settling in and taking an “observe and learn” attitude. He is already enjoying the luxury of having an “administrative team” to consult and bounce ideas off of, a luxury he didn’t have at the Highwood School District where he was superintendent for three years or at Opheim before that where he was principal for two years and a science teacher for seven. Headline: Malta Swi... Full story

  • Last weeks of Summer has me ready to hunt

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 23, 2014

It seems summer only just arrived and it’s almost time to start hunting again. I was fully in summer mode -- fish, garden, and keeping the house cool upmost in my mind -- when I checked the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks website this morning. I had applied for a number of special permits over the last couple of months and wanted to see if I’d drawn any of them. It turned out I was unsuccessful in my attempt to draw a sheep tag, but the drawings for elk and antelope tags are still pending. Tha... Full story

  • Reality TV has turned me into a know-it-all

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 23, 2014

For most people, the term Reality TV conjures images of the Kardashians being annoying, Paris Hilton mindlessly flaunting her wealth or the boys of Duck Dynasty doing any and everything in 22-minutes besides building bird calls. And let’s be honest, there is very little “reality” in Reality TV. Most of the shows are scripted from the opening scene until the conclusion with whatever problem the “stars” were facing is solved and squared away, wrapped in a pretty red bow. But there are a handful of shows, real or scripted, that I watch in my dow... Full story

  • No Chinese food?!?

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 23, 2014

As I sit in my home on a Monday night, I can only help but notice Mondays are a little darker. A little gloomier. Over the last 12 weeks or so no matter how much work had I had to do for the PCN, I would not miss a single episode of 24. That show was my escape from an otherwise eventful week. Now that the season came to an end, I’m left wondering is there going to be more or is this the end for Jack Bauer? Like 24, there are many things I wish would come back. Like Surge. I remember when g... Full story

  • Young Cole Hould among top placers in heeling after event four

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 23, 2014

Cole Hould isn't your typical 12 year old athlete. In a world ruled by sports like basketball and football, young Hould is a roper. Though he is from Havre and isn't a Phillips county resident, he is roping well. According to his mother Ruby Hould, Cole has been riding horses since the age of three or four. At his age today, Hould is the youngest of the Crossfire summer series team ropers, but age isn't anything but a number. Hould was brought into the sport of team roping last year after he... Full story
