Though he has been in and out of Malta, working, for the past 12 months, chances are good that you don't know who Paul VanMarter is, but you have, almost for certain, seen the work he has been doing. Starting around this same time of year last year, VanMarter started climbing the stairs of the old grain elevators due west of R& G Quality Feed Supply on the north side of Malta with the sole purpose of dismantling the great, gray beast, nail by nail and board by board. VanMarter said that he...

I've been watching a family of Hungarian partridges every morning come through the yard! I'm happy to announce that they are still all alive! Ten babies! Saige and Zoey Stordahl have been up for a few days with Rodney and, of course, that means Gramma gets to love on them also! I took a class this week from the GPDM called Paleontology 101! It was interesting! Lisa Askelson of Cut Bank met me at the GPDM on Monday with her daughter-in-law Crystal and grand babies Kendyl and Kaiden! Sunday...

  • A million bison would save us all

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jul 27, 2017

There may finally be a solution to the bison problem. Or not. Depends on what you view as a problem. During a recent meeting in Big Sky, the National Bison Association announced plans to boost the number of bison in North America to 1 million within 10 years. That’s great news if you think there are too few, and even sort of great news if you think there are already too many. There are certainly too many in Yellowstone Park and attempts to curtail their numbers are seldom well received. A lot...

  • I'm not one for trends

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 27, 2017

I am not often the one to follow certain trends but I caved and bought a fidget spinner. The funny thing that I have noticed as I get older I have often looked at some of the trends that the younger generation is trying to popularize and have thought, man, that’s stupid. I can tell you one thing; I will not be wearing a romper this summer or any summer for that matter. If you are a grown man that can wear a “casual” onesie in public, power to you. But for one thing I can’t fit in a...

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Jul 27, 2017

A recent article in the Society Star made me stop and think about our Museum volunteers. Our volunteers are the beat that keeps the PC Museum going. The real value of our volunteers can never be measured as they bring such diverse talents to the museum. A rough estimate of our volunteer hours since the beginning of January 2017 is approximately 2,000 hours. In monetary value those hours are equal to a full-time employee for 6 months. Thank-you volunteers you are so valuable. Our volunteers wear many hats including flower garden care, help to...

  • A possibility of flash flooding in Little Rockies following July Fire

    Tanja Fransen, National Weather Service|Jul 27, 2017

The recent July Fire brings another concern to the residents and visitors of the Little Rockies, and that is flash flooding. After fires, the soil becomes "hydrophobic" meaning that it can not absorb the moisture and instead it runs off. That occurs at a much lower rate of precipitation than it would normally take to flood. Unfortunately, flash flooding due to burn scars can continue for years afterwards, so this isn't just an issue for the next few months. The primary area of concern due to the burn severity is the road and homes in the...

It has continued to be super hot during the afternoons although mornings are usually surprisingly cool. The fires all over Montana are taking a terrible toll on acres of grass and trees destroyed. It is unbelievable how fast some of them have traveled and increased each day. We thank God for the fire fighters and the people who support and work with them. Our prayers go out for their safety and success with the fires. On Sunday morning it was very smoky from the fires and you could definitely sm...
