  • Rocket Man

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 12, 2015

Malta's Dwight Score spends most of his days making cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets and French Fries as the owner of Joe's in and Out, but on those rare days off, he kind of enjoys blowing stuff up. "This is my Christmas," Score joked as he loaded fireworks into a box in the bed of his truck. "Christmas in August." Prior to the demolition derby at the Phillips County Fair two Saturdays ago, Score and his assistant, Cole Brown, strategically plugged artillery shells into about 30 tubes housed in...

  • The Dodson Fair and the Gros Ventre

    Celia Lankford, PCN Correspondent|Aug 12, 2015

Editor's Note: This historic piece was written by former Dodson resident Cecelia Lankford about 10-years ago as a journal entry. Cecelia passed away last spring at the age of 101, but after the celebration of the 100th Phillips County Fair two week' ago, her family thought this would be a good time for Cecelia to share her memories from nearly 100 years ago. Thank you to the Lankford and Ereaux families for sharing this with the PCN. Years ago, as long as I can remember, the Gros Ventre people...

  • P.C. Fair Cookbook contains plenty of county's history

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 12, 2015

Shortly after the conclusion of the 99th Phillips County Fair, the call for recipes went out for a Centennial Cookbook to help celebrate the 100th Annual Phillips County Fair. Nearly 12-months and 343 recipes later, a cookbook was formulated, but this isn’t your run of the mill cookbook. “It’s kind of a souvenir, but it also has a bunch of people’s history in it as well,” said Joy Linn, one of the people who helped put the book together. While many of the book’s recipes are of the old family sort, some are recipes that took home blue ribbon...

  • Randy's Machine Shop changes hands after 30 years

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 12, 2015

For the past 30 years, Randy Shores has been the name, face and go to guy to get things done at Randy's Machine Shop in Malta. As of last week, the 30-year ownership of the well-known shop came to an end. "He is working on cement and that is not good for him," Randy Shore's wife, Mary, said. "And just the high intensity of labor that he has to put out there is too much ...he's getting up there, he's almost 60, and this is a young guy's game." Brian Lee Kunda, the owner of Kunda Welding Inc. in...

  • I could have shot Cecil the Lion

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Aug 12, 2015

My dog Ace needs a haircut. He’s starting to look like Cecil the lion. I hope he doesn’t get shot by a Minnesota dentist. Trophy hunters have always drawn the ire of the antis. They’re easy targets. Consequently, I’ve always chosen to keep my trophy hunting aspirations in the closet. Some of my hunting companions might say it’s not so much my choice as my ineptitude at bagging any critter resembling a trophy. But I would beg to differ. Trophies are in the eye of the beholder, and in my eye I...

  • Deer season hasn't opened, I hope you missed

    Barbara Sclocker|Aug 12, 2015

Dear Editor, Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of an approximately year- old doe hanging out on my property for the day - although she left every time I opened one of the doors she would return later. In the evening, a doe and her two fawns also came to visit. Often I find lay spots in the grass but this was the first time I was allowed the joy of observing them so close at hand. Thursday, at approximately 7:15 a.m., I heard three shots in a row and then a fourth shot shortly after. I used the Montana Fish and Game website to see if...

  • My take on the first of many debates

    Mark Hebert, His Own Drum|Aug 12, 2015

I take umbrage with Joseph Heller’s cartoon (just to the left of this column) even though I placed it there. Some weeks are better than others with our cartoonist and though I figured this cartoon would anger the least amount of people than any other he submitted, I thought Thursday night’s first (two) GOP Debates hosted by Fox News were both entertaining and informative. With any good debate, there are winners, losers and the also ran. Here is my take on the night’s events, for what it is worth. The “Winners” Fox News. The cable news show...

  • Hoping for some Good News Bears

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 12, 2015

Sunday marked an important day of the year for many of us sports fans who see light for their beloved football team. The NFL Hall of Fame Game; The first televised preseason game of the year. A subpar year for the Chicago Bulls, a poor season for the White Sox and awesome Stanley Cup Win for the Chicago Blackhawks gave me mixed emotions this past year. There’s no greater feeling than when your home team dominates a sport. The Blackhawks have done just that. After winning the Stanley Cup for the...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 12, 2015

Many Americans at one point or another have wanted to travel the country. Common thinking says that if you were to make the trip, an airplane, automobile or RV would be the best way to go. That's not the case with the Bike and Build riders that came through Malta last Saturday. The crew of 24 men and women took up shelter at St. Mary's after a 70 mile bike ride from Glasgow. "We're biking across the country to raise money for affordable housing," Bike and Build crew leader Sam Bondurant, told...

The 100th Annual Phillips County Fair had plenty of talent and events that kept crowds coming back for more.
