  • 'It's just a knife'

    Kirsten Voegel, PCN Correspondent|Aug 24, 2016

As some of you know I had an older brother Brian who we lost when he was 20 years old. If you have a couple minutes, please take the time to read this, it's a very touching story and worth the read. Where the story begins is back in 1983, when Brian was just eight years old. My dad and brothers, Brian and Bob, were fishing at Cottonwood Creek on Holter Lake. They had caught a couple fish and my dad was teaching Brian how to clean fish with a Buck pocket knife. Later that evening, after arriving...

  • 3,643 attend P.C. Fair

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 24, 2016

Though board members expected the numbers to be down from the 100th Phillips County Fair because of the bicentennial celebration last year, the 2016 Phillips County Fair in Dodson was well attended with a total of 3,634 people through the main gates during the four-day event. “We as a board are very pleased with these numbers as last year was the 100th year celebration and there were a lot more people attending for that reason alone,” said board member Eric Wilke. “The five year average for p...

  • I couldn't imagine a better place

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Aug 24, 2016

I found some new country to hunt last week. A large expanse of federal land, it offers limited motorized access. In the short time I spent there I saw grouse, partridge, pheasants, ducks, mule deer and antelope. I can’t wait to return. Upon my arrival back at the house, however, I heard Jennifer Fielder, a Republican state senator from Thompson Falls, decrying the dismal state of our federal lands on the Voices of Montana radio show. Fielder advocates transferring federal public land to the s...

  • You guys are unbelievable, God bless

    Aug 24, 2016

Dear Editor, My son-in-law was recently placed in a very precarious situation, one in which a person hopes to never be, but he was only doing the job he signed up for. Keeping you and yours safe. This resulted in serious injury and he was airlifted to Benefis Hospital. A “very scary” time for his family. Thanks to quick thinking and competent people and MANY prayers the outcome was favorable. The staff on the Cardiac floor were amazing both to him and his family. But the outpouring of Love and Compassion from the Brothers in Blue (GFPD, Cas...

  • The lost trade of the paper boy

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 24, 2016

My first job in the newspaper business occurred in 1984 as a newspaper delivery boy, pitching rolled-up and rubber-banded copies of the Honolulu Star Bulletin at the doors of local stores from the seat of my 1983, chrome Huffy Pro Thunder 3 bicycle. Each afternoon I would pick-up 60-ish newspapers from the drop point, fold and band them and then tuck them neatly into my carrier bag with Star Bulletin proudly silkscreened across the front canvas. National Newspaper Carrier Day is on September 4, which falls on a Sunday this year. Anyone who had...

  • The Great Bee Massacre

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 24, 2016

I could almost label each year based on some type of wild intruder that gets into our house. The first year wasn’t so much an inside intruder as much as it was mosquitoes. The second year however, we found a couple of mice (that we know of) and after some d-Con, a couple of traps and some foam the problem was solved. This year unfortunately we have found out that the native bumble bee or more specifically a group of Hunt’s Bumble Bees have made residence under our front door. I did see one go...

Mr. Strubb says he intends to put on a fast express service between here and the mountains and do all in his power to have the cars running on scheduled time. The practice of throwing refuse in the streets is one that should be discouraged by all persons who are interested in the appearance of our city. It seems common practice for some people...
