  • A stroll down Memory Lane

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Sep 13, 2017

Just south of 100 people turned-up for the annual Phillips County Historic Walk last Sunday in Malta at the H. G. Robinson House and Garden, and though most in attendance agreed that a rainy day that would have pushed the event indoors would have been favored, the sunny, 80-degree afternoon and it's breeze from the north was a fine alternative. Those at the event spent a leisurely afternoon in the shade reminiscing with each other and then with the eight hosts and hostesses who portrayed early...

  • Jenkins' Inky's set to open on Saturday

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Sep 13, 2017

In the last few years, the semicolon has morphed from an often-misused punctuation mark into a symbol used by those struggling with depression, suicide, anxiety, addiction; either personally or with loved ones. “A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you, and the sentence is your life,” Project Semicolon Amy Bluel founder wrote last year before taking her own life. When Malta’s Heather Jenkins opens Inky’s Studio this Saturday, she hopes people line-up around the block to...

  • Successful small grain planning

    Marko Manoukian, P.C. Extension Agent|Sep 13, 2017

As producers move further into small grain harvest the chance of cutting a grain crop that has a light test weight is highly probable. If you are considering saving some seed to plant in 2018 it will be necessary to test these grain lots for purity, germination, seeds per pound and test weight. Doug Holen, Manager Montana Foundation Seed Program provided an example of foundation seed wheat that only had a 44 lbs test weight but had a germination of 99%. There are increases in risk when planting low test weight seed. If light test weight seed...

  • Imagine my surprise

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 13, 2017

The bird season opened on an unsettling note. With my obituary. I’d gone to bed early and missed the text message my friend David sent later that evening. But when I woke at 5 a.m. and glanced at my phone to check the time, I saw it. Under the heading of obituaries was a picture of me. David, the gravedigger in town, regularly checks the online version of the local paper, for upcoming work. He’d spotted my mug on the obits page, sent condolences in a text to my wife, and called dibs on my sem...

  • I'm not a road warrior

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 13, 2017

When my wife wanted to squeeze in a drive to Tennessee and then Missouri to our vacation I reverted back to being a two-year-old. To me there was nothing appealing about spending 60 hours of precious vacation time on the road. To make matters worse, before the vacation I had to give myself an early deadline for our Fall Sports Preview and knew that I would be exhausted before we would head to Chicago. I’m not a road warrior. I get antsy and bored when I have to drive anywhere over an hour a...

  • Not happy with opinions on President Trump in the PCN

    Sep 13, 2017

Dear Editor, The Phillips County News Letters to the Editor states in fine print that it will not print libelous and scandalous editorials. However, in our opinion, it continually prints scandalous, libelous and non-fact based editorials against our current President on a regular bases without any other editorials from a different viewpoint. When we called the PCN to question this we were hastily told this was due to "freedom of speech." Wikipedia states that, "interpretations of both harm and offense to freedom of speech are culturally and pol...

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Sep 13, 2017

1 years ago September 13, 1917 Montana bootleggers in eastern Montana are using clever means of getting their goods across the line into North Dakota. One officer got wise and noticed that a man crossing the border in a high-powered car had five extra tires in his car. When he unscrewed the top from one of them he discovered it was filled with whiskey. ☻☻☻ Sheriff Crab and Deputy Vaupel made a raid on an alleged gambling den that had been in operation for some time in a tarpaper shack west of...
