  • Curtis and Bonnie Starr retire from PCN after 29 years in Malta

    Mar 5, 2014

The year that Curtis and Bonnie Starr took over the Phillips County News in Malta, Ronald Reagan was finishing up his first term as U.S. President, a first-class postage stamp could be had for 22-cents and Meet me in Montana hit number one on the Billboard Country charts. The year was 1985. In the previous year, the Starrs and another couple purchased the Chinook Opinion and Harlem News from the Johnson family. After running those two papers for a year it became apparent that they weren’t large enough to support two large families (each f... Full story

  • New editor of PCN takes over; promise to build on the past

    Mar 5, 2014

Aloha Gang, Mark Hebert here. This week I take over as the publisher of the Phillips County News here in town and I couldn’t be more proud. I know I have huge shoes to fill with Curtis and Bonnie Starr de-parting from the position and, to be honest, it would require my feet growing to the size of a Yeti’s overnight to even get close to filling the huge pair of moccasins that they leave behind. I imagine that there will be some bumps and bruises along the way ... the occasional named spelled incorrectly, typo or deadline missed ... but it is... Full story

  • Loring Volunteer Fire Department Raffle limited to 400 tickets

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 5, 2014

Have you ever seen the 1990 Western Quigley Down Under? If not, one of the most impressive things about the movie – aside from Tom Selleck’s boss mustache – is the rifle that the flick’s hero sports around the outback of Australia. Well, if you play your cards right and buy the winning ticket in this year’s Loring Volunteer Fire Department’s raffle, you could own a rifle similar to Quigley’s. Though the raffles’ rifle is a bit different, it was made by Shiloh Manufacturing Company out of Big Timber, the same folks who made the rifle for the mov... Full story

    Mar 5, 2014

Two candidates, one an incumbent, have tossed their hats into the Malta School Board race. Incumbent Gaelen Curtis of Malta has filed her intention to seek a second term on the board while newcomer Thayne Mackey of Malta has also announced he will run. Two school board seats are up for election in the May 6 school election, the one currently held by Curtis and another currently held by John Meisdalen. Meisdalen has already announced he won’t seek reelection to his seat. Curtis is running for her third term on the board. The deadline for f... Full story

  • Avoiding the dreaded polar vortex

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 5, 2014

Now that climate change is upon us I’m trying to pay closer attention to the weather. I don’t want to get caught in a polar vortex unprepared. To that end I spend an awful lot of time staring at the television, anxiously awaiting the Weather Channel’s Local on the Eights. I care little what’s happening elsewhere. I simply want the skinny on wherever I am. However, as a creature of habit, I remain a bit unnerved by the weather network’s change in the local forecast. Jim Cantori now tells me... Full story

  • 41 years of Stargazing comes to and end

    Curtis Starr|Mar 5, 2014

The Bible says there is a time and season for everything. The older I get the more I realize how true that is. Seems like you spend the first half of your life doing things for the first time and the latter half of your life doing things for the last time. I’d like to say I remember the first Stargazer column I ever wrote 41 years ago after becoming editor of my hometown weekly newspaper a few weeks after being discharged from the Army. But I admit I don’t. I’m sure my wife’s got a copy of it somewhere. I was 24 years old. Now I’m not. In c... Full story

  • Common Core education scheme wrong for our children

    Mar 5, 2014

Dear Editor, The Common Core Education scheme is wrong for our children. Normally, government antics don’t excite me, i.e. the latest on increasing the minimum wage or the new farm bill as I am retired and I do not farm. But a silent alarm has been going off across America and I am wondering if moms, dads, grandparents, school boards or school administrators in Montana are aware of it. Once again our elected government officials are trying to impress their ideals upon one of our most precious freedoms: the education of our children. The s... Full story

  • Sage grouse column is more material for Timmy's library...

    Mar 5, 2014

Dear Editor, More material for Timmy’s library she used to say while reading the paper. That would have been my great grandmother’s remarks after reading an article like Parker Heinlen’s column on sage grouse. Timmy was a poodle mix that refused to do his business outside. Granny would put newspapers on the floor next to the toilet for Timmy’s use. Can’t you just see Timmy circling his paper looking for just the right spot for deposit, almost as if he were actually reading. I’m not sure what incentive for busting sod you are referring t... Full story

  • Memories for the Week of March 5

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Mar 5, 2014

March 10, 2004 – 10 Years Ago Sletten Construction Company, working through the winter, has completed the renovation of the Dodson Diversion Dam, installing inflatable rubber dams to replace the worn out steel gates. The approximately $1.1 million project was financed by a loan from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation and 20-year bonds sold by members of the local irrigation district. Peter Nolan, a member of the Houston Astronomical Society, not only looks up to the stars in fa... Full story

  • Malta City Council adopts guidelines for utility bill late fee adjustments

    Curtis Starr|Mar 5, 2014

The Malta City Council recently adopted new guidelines for water and sewer bill late fee adjustments, accepted the resignation of a veteran employee, began the annexation procedure to bring a new home into the city limits to which city services have been extended and indicated efforts are still underway to find the source of sewer gas which occasionally plagues some downtown businesses. At its regular council meeting last week, the council adopted the recommendations of three clerks who work in the city office and have to deal with the public... Full story

  • Lady Panthers take second, punch ticket to state tourney

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 5, 2014

It was a moment which would have made most eighth-grader hoopsters, playing at the varsity level, tremble in their high-top sneakers. With just 10 seconds left in the game, and her team trailing by three points in the Eastern C Divisional Tournament championship game, Jada Sudbrack yanked down an offensive rebound, landed, elevated again and drained a two-point bucket off the glass, getting fouled in the process. The Saco-Whitewater crowd in attendance went nuts. Her teammates slapped her on the back in appreciation. The opposition’s coach, H... Full story
