Football: Young and undersized but sharp in Coach Oxarart's first camp

Gnats, heat and mosquitoes plagued the Mustang practice field as the Mustangs football camp kicked off last Monday, July 21.

The three day camp included a plethora of drills for players past and present.

The camp also gave players insight into formations and plays that are a part of Nick Oxarart's new system.

"A lot of guys have been coming on Monday nights and working together," said first year Head Coach Nick Oxarart.

Those impromptu practices had players looking sharp in practice.

Thanks to some training in the weight room, the undersized team looks bulkier than most have thought.

One of the most noticeable things has been the presence and confidence of starting quarterback Jase Galt, who in his junior year looks a lot more comfortable rolling out of the pocket.

"He's probably the guy that's looking real sharp and has shown a lot of improvement from last year," said coach Oxarart.

Oxarart believes that last basketball season helped mature Galt into the player he is today.

Other than Galt, Oxarart was impressed with the receivers Galt will be throwing to.

Tyson Carney, Allen Williamson, Ostin Welch and Tyler Ost are among the receivers that have shown improvement.

Another, tight end, Devon Raybon, who made some impressive catches at camp.

Jordan Pierce and Devon at tight end will be real strong players for us," coach Oxarart said. "They can both block and catch the ball real well."

The team also will welcome back running back Quintan Boos, who started in place of an injured Reid Robinson last season.

Though the team is undersized and young on the offensive and defensive lines, there is no indication that they will be a weakness.

"They all showed up at camp and they are working hard," said Coach Oxarart. "There's no reason why these guys can't have success."

Though he admits they are small, Oxarart told the PCN that they are smart and work well together.

As far as positional coaches go, Oxarart will also be the team's defensive coordinator, while Coach Shawn Bleth will be offensive coordinator, as well as coach the offensive line and inside linebackers. Coach Delmar Henry will coach receivers and secondary and Tyler Hanson will be the offensive and defensive line coach. Oxarart will also coach quarterbacks, running backs and outside linebackers.

Coach Bleth will call offensive plays, while coach Oxarart will call defensive plays.
