Mustang Football: Season ends after 41-0 loss in Bigfork

The team loses four seniors, but regains plenty of experienced players for next year

The season for the Malta Mustangs came to an abrupt end last Saturday as they were on the wrong side of a 41-0 beatdown, compliments of the Bigfork Vikings.

And though the season is over, Malta should be proud of their team, who wasn't even expected by many to have a winning season.

Malta did not only go 5-3 but they won a game in the opening round of the playoffs.

"Our team as a whole really came together and our offensive line grew as a unit and got a lot of experience," Mustang Head Coach Nick Oxarart told the PCN.

Given the low number of the program in recent years, that experience may be more important than anything.

Given Malta's four lone seniors, there were always seven or more underclassmen on the field gaining valuable experience and it showed.

"It was a big plus to go two games into the post-season," Coach Oxarart said.

This was a luxury most B teams did not have.

Being the last game of the senior class athletes' careers, Coach Oxarart mentioned all four brought things to the table.

First he talked of Cole Brown, who played on the offensive and defensive line.

"He had a back injury as a junior, so we were super happy that he was able to play every game for us, all season long," he said. "He stepped up for us on the offensive and defensive line and was a leader of that group."

He continued to say that the lineman become the identity of the team, due to the fact they are the most heavily relied on to do the dirty work.

"He was a great leader on those lines and a smart player. He brought the younger guys along and they looked up to him," he said. "He was a real valuable asset to our team."

Running back Quintan Boos was the workhorse of the team, racking up more yards than any other player and often times took the hardest beating, yet inflicted the most pain to opposing teams.

"We relied on him and used the heck out of him," Coach Oxarart said. "We ran him hard and he just kept going all the time and he never gave up.

Oxarart made a special note about his effort against Bigfork, a game in which Boos had more rushing yards (119 total) than the team had in the game (117).

"He was running downhill hard," Coach Oxarart said. "Bigfork was definitely aware of where he was at all times and he earned the respect of every team we played."

He went on to say that those in his path often times did not
