Malta Wrestling: Grapplers struggle in opening week

The Malta Mustangs Wrestling team competed in Lewistown Thursday night December 11. They also wrestled in Glasgow the next day.

“In Lewistown we had some solid competition with Class A Lewistown and perennial powerhouse Choteau and a large Fairfield/Simms squad,” Coach Ryan LaBrie said. “Our youthful team wrestled tough against some of our Eastern B/C Teams; Glasgow, Wolf Point and Poplar at the Glasgow Invitational.”

The team welcomed back Antonio Lopez and Cody Werk for their first action of the season.

Lopez led the team, going 2-0 at the event, He also won all three matches in Glasgow.

He prevailed over a tough Tanner Roness from Glasgow.

“He seems to be setting a pretty good pace for himself in these first two outings,” Coach LaBrie said.

The team had a tall order to face such experienced schools, but Coach LaBrie reiterated how proud of his team, he was.

“Our lighter guys had some pretty good clashes with some more experienced wrestlers which is valuable for their growth in the sport,” He said. “I’m proud of how they all have been responding to their matches wins and losses.”
