Malta takes twelfth place at State; Simanton places third; Lopez fourth

The Malta-Whitewater Wrestling team fared well at the State B-C Tournament last weekend in Billings at the MetraPark.

Trey Simanton led Malta, placing third in the 113 pound weight class.

Antonio Lopez placed fourth at the meet in the 205 class.

Malta placed twelfth at the meet with 53 points. They nearly got caught in a three way tie for tenth place with Conrad and Shepherd who had 54 points each.

Choteau ultimately won the event with 188.5 points, followed by Colstrip who had 145. Forsyth was third with 129 points. Other Hi-Line teams placing included Chinook, who took seventh with 68.5 points, Glasgow finished sixteenth with 38 points and Harlem finished tied for eighteenth with 32.

Trey Simanton placed third after having to wrestle through four opponents after losing in the quarter finals to Lincoln County's Kahden Bakkila, who pinned Simanton in 1:10.

"Not much was going through my head in my quarter finals match," Trey Simanton told the PCN. "I just didn't go out there wrestling my best and use my potential that I had."

Knowing he had to fight back Simanton won out to clinch third place, pinning every opponent he faced, first Belt's Jimmy Smith in 2:15, then Ronan's Seth Cheff in :52 and then Ronan's Hunter Peterson in 3:40.

Simanton would go on to face Colstrip's Lane Bradley in the third place match.

Simanton faced some adversity right away, nearly getting pinned within the first minute of the match.

As it looked like his season was going to finish, Simanton thought, "I've got to get moving, get my hips underneath me and just wrestling."

Then Simanton fought back and earned a hard earned point, breaking away from Bradley's control.

Simanton then gained control with a takedown, registering two points.

While on the mat, Bradley defended well at first, however Simanton fought through his defenses and pinned Bradley :38 into the second round of the match.

"I just felt his hips starting to turn and I put my legs in and squeezed as hard as I could, hoping his shoulder would go down," Simanton said. "His shoulders went down and when I looked at the ref, he was calling a pin and I just had a smile on my face."

Simanton finished the season 46-8, with 44 pins throughout the year, which tied Evan Hinebauch's fourth place record, according to the MHSA record books.

He had the third most amount of pins for any wrestler this season.

Antonio Lopez had a similar journey through the B-C tournament in the 205 weight class, having to fight his way back after losing a match in the quarterfinal round to Huntley Project's Kian Brown.

Lopez won his opening match against Ronan's Luiz Gonzales in 2:20.

While facing elimination Lopez clawed his way back up to the third place bout.

Lopez defeated Colstrip's Merlin Whitedirt in a 6-0 decision. He then pinned Chinook's Kevin Young in 3:41. He then won a 5-2 decision against Whitehall's Dillon Hoerauf.

The third place match was an intense one that ended 2-1 in favor of Choteau's Travis Field.

Lopez nearly scored a two point takedown with control, however the wrestlers were out of bounds. With only 2 seconds left Lopez didn't have enough time to get another shot at a takedown.

120 pounder Kaden Moore won his opening match against Colstrip's Peyton Negathon by pinfall at 4:01.

Moore would eventually lose his next two matches, the first to Lincoln County's Jonathan Schmidt in 3:50 and the second to Shelby's Brodey White.

Chase Murray won his first match in the 182 pound weight class. He defeated Noxon's Alan Chojnacky in 3:04.

"I just caught him at the right time," Murray said. "They say don't let them make the first move, just keep the pressure on him, stay low because the low man wins."

He would then lose to Choteau's Steeler French, who eventually went on to win the championship round.

After the loss to French, Murray would go on to defeat Ronan's Kail Cheff in an 8-3 decision.

Murray then lost to Columbus' Will Griffel in 1:58.
