Schye signs with University of Montana Western

A little less than a month ago, on February 3 to be exact, a press release confirmed that Malta M-ette senior Darby Schye signed with The University of Montana Western.

Schye, as a 6'1" low post player, helped lead the M-ettes to the team's ninth state title in the school's history.

Schye is the daughter of Tad and Amy Schye, both educators and coaches at Malta Public Schools.

Schye had a few options on where she would sign including The University of Great Falls, however she knew that once she left her visit in Dillon that The University of Montana Western was where she would continue her basketball career.

"I just really liked the people there," Schye told the PCN. "I could have gone to UGF and UGF is doing really well right now but I just really like that I know people in Dillon."

She also spoke highly about the school's head coach, Lindsay Woolley.

"I like the coach there a lot," Schye said. "He's a really cool guy."

Coach Woolley said a few nice things of Schye in the press release.

"We think Darby is just scratching the surface of her potential," Woolley said. "She is a strong girl with good size who runs well and we are very excited to watch her develop over the next four years."

The offense that Schye will learn involves using a high post, which means she will see some time behind the perimeter, something that will be a different look than what she got as an M-ette.

"They have a high post, so I will get to shoot threes next year," Schye said.

Though it is different Schye is legitimately excited to prove she can hit shots from anywhere on the court.

"It will be fun,": she said. "I'll probably be nervous and miss to begin with."

Though Schye is still in high school and her first college season is more than half a year away, she is working on her jump shot until the team sends her a set of workouts.

"They just said to work on shooting and everything this summer," Schye said. "I'm sure they're going to send a workout soon for summer, but I'm sure I'll do the workout and then some, because they're usually not too intense and I want to be stronger."

Schye not only stood out in basketball as an All-State and All-Conference athlete, but has also been a state placer in Shot Put and has been All-Conference twice in volleyball.

Schye intends to major in psychology.
