One Nation, Under God

Excited about some good, ol' fashion deer hunting

Well Malta, it is getting closer and closer to that general deer season! I have not been this excited to do some good ol’ fashioned deer hunting in a long time. The weather has been cooperative, and from the sounds of it, the wildlife population is thriving this year. If only I would have taken bow-hunter’s safety as a kid too. I could have already been done with my efforts on this side of the state too, if only I was as proficient with a bow the way my best friend is. However, this is a lot easier said than done, because the last time I shot a bow I lost the one arrow I shot.

My strongest ambition this year is to kill two animals I have never hunted before. There is an over-the-counter option for both wolves and black bears this year. If I had to choose the trophy, I would prefer out of the two, wolf wins every time. I hope to kill as many wolves as I can in the time I’m living in southwestern Montana. There’s an old saying about hunting from Sue Aikens that I’m sure many of you know. “If you got something every time, it’d be called shopping”.

There is only a few things I know about hunting, but the old trips with my father, Bob, and Dane were some of the best hunting experiences I’ve had. Although, Kendall and I definitely have the best one-that-got-away story, with a massive Mule Deer dubbed Charlie. It has been a very long time since I have been this excited about hunting. Regardless of what I am able to come up with this year I’ll be happy enough participating, I’m just really hoping God is on my side with putting a few deer steaks on my plate this winter.

This weekend has definitely been one for the books. It was a nice homecoming for sure, but I am more than ready to head back home to Bozeman. If I didn’t get a chance to catch up with you, I apologize, part of having a big family, is spending big time. Time well spent, is the best investment you could ever make, and I'm always conscious of that thought. Have a great week Malta, and stay the same. I’ll see you around the holidays!
