Webb wins Men's League Championship

Gordon Webb may be one of the youngest golfers in Malta's Men's Golf League, but Webb has been a strong golfer since his years at Malta High School. Webb has won three state titles in his high school career and has even seen success as a professional, winning the State Amateur trophy after high school. This year Webb continued his success winning the Men's League Championship with a total of 38 last Thursday, August 18 at Marian Hills Golf Course.

The men's singles championship took place over the past two weeks in which week one featured favorable weather over the first nine holes, while last Thursday was rainy, cold and unfavorable.

Luckily for Webb, it just started raining as he was at his last hole.

"Some of the guys got stuck in some really nasty stuff," Webb said. "I got lucky, I guess."

In the first round, Webb was not happy with his first nine.

"Everything went good except for off of the tee," Webb said. "I hit three out of bounds. That really killed me. Everything after that was fine."

In order to correct his game, Webb opted to use his 3-wood instead of his driver.

"I just needed to hit with my 3-wood so I could get a little straighter instead of further," Webb said.

Webb said that on Thursday he had a lot of birdie opportunities but he couldn't make a putt.

He was also having issues with controlling his tee shots.

"I got to my sixth hole of the day and my drives went wayward," Webb said. "That hurt a lot on the scorecard but I was able to come back and birdie the next hole. That's golf."

Webb has spent a lot of time on the golf course in his young career, so he has the utmost respect for the game.

"It's taken me a long ways throughout my life," Webb said. "I got to play college golf and all of that, so I've got a lot of respect for the game. But it's also a game that can eat you up if you have a game like I had last night. But if you go out and enjoy it like I do now, it's a game you can enjoy with your buddies. I have nothing bad to say about the game, I've always loved it."

Webb shared how he approaches every hole.

"It's all strategy," he said. "That's something I've always put a lot of work into; it's my strategy for every single hole. Read every little bit of that hole and be prepared for it. I've always used my strategy to prepare the best I could for a course."
